I started vaping about 6-7 months ago. Smoke free from day one of my vaping experience. I have now ventured into DIY over the past two months. I thought I would share some things I have learned, both online and on my own.

1) vaping costs more than cigarettes. At least initially when factoring in my addiction to DIY:facepalm:, but one can not place a price on the difference in how I feel vaping compared to smoking, Oh wait I just saw my bank statement, the price is about $900.00

2) Take recipes as a guide, too many variables in taste of DIY juice. What people use for vaping, taste buds etc. I have seen reviews of concentrates on here that people swear are just horrible, yet I find work well in some recipes, Butterscotch, Malted Milk, Blackberry etc. I use mostly tanks for my vaping, but noticed a big difference in flavor and sweetness when I started using my kanger turbo tank with the dual coil and sub ohm's. So I can see why someone would say, it has no taste at all and others say it's sickly sweet. experiment people, try something new, there are enough cheap clones that work well for tanks and mods out there. You might be surprised at what you have been missing. I was.

3) Mixing flavors....ahhh I initially thought that all flavors had to be around 20% of the mix, despite constant reading of start low percentages and work your way up. Sometimes less is more, the sooner I realized that, the easier mixing became. Also I have found true is that some recipes taste great in tanks and better on drippers...and more importantly VICE VERSA ( again this is my opinion, please don't kill me, I have stuff steeping)

4) if you make your own juice and are able to produce some good stuff, your friends who vape, stop by more often, I actually made some good butterscotch banana and a few friends loved it, I gave a bottle of overly sweet one to another friend who sat with us and said : I don't get it, "how can you all like it, but I hate it" ahhhh good times

5) Sometimes the best juice is going against the grain, I was so focused on making the next great ejuice mixing things that sounded good, when some of the best juice is mixing things that don't sound so good, orange, candycane, cola ( don't try that one, it was for reference, or do try it who knows)

6) label everything, I can not begin to tell you how many 10 ml bottles I forgot to label showed up a few weeks later, not knowing what it was, it became mystery juice, I finally threw away the mystery juice as I am getting too old for mysteries these days. Never mind, I just found more mystery juice

7) Save your recipes and give them names- Just going to have to trust me on this one. SEE #6 above, the bad part is I have tried some mystery juice and it was quite tasty, what the hell was in it, I could only guess.

8) Don't quit, yes it can be frustrating to mix up a bottle and it smells great, only to taste like vaping a cloud of nothing, been there done that got frustrated. decided I needed 70 more flavors from everyone in the world...I didn't, don't get me wrong eggnog, pear gummy fish is awesome!! especially with a touch of bergomont imported orange from the Tibetan mountains

9) Why steep? if it isn't good now, it won't be later. steeping is the equivalent of the Unicorn, some people like it, some people don't believe in it and others won't vape their juice until rainbows shoot out their you know what, so from what I have found which is absolutely no help

Some juice needs to sit or at least shook violently, not talking in your hand, but attached to a drill press and spun for a few hours ( I actually did this...it helped a little, but not a whole lot) Ultrasonic...yup got one, use it, big capacity, heat, the whole nine yards, it helps a little with some flavors and does nothing for others. My favorite way to steep is using a tea candle on one of those little hobbit hut looking warmers, put the candle inside, put my mix in a heavy Pyrex cup and let it sit for a few hours, this seems to reduce steep time for me drastically on some of the custard flavors, very little heat but constant warm juice seem to meld the flavors together. Other juices need to be left in the dark and lied to in order to get flavor to come out....But seriously, you will find what works for you..But I highly recommend the candle, plus whatever you have in the pyrex cups will usually give a nice aroma to the room it's in

10) While I don't think my fingers really smelled before, they smell great now ..... always like a custard or fruit of somekind.

11) Always keep papertowels or microfiber cloth if vaping there is always a need, especially if you just want normal smelling fingers as opposed to a vanilla custard with a hint of bacon and cinnamon( sounds gross, thank me later)

12) last but not least, a big thanks for all the information I have found on here, I will continue to mix until one day Indiana jones great great grandson will be looking for he last 10 ml of a mystery juice made in the Pocono mountains of PA

Initially, the cost is a bit much, but when you subtract what you are saving with not having to buy cigarettes, it evens out quickly. Everything I spent on equipment and juices and now DIY has now become a wash over the last 4 months. Now, each month will be a big savings, at least for me and Mom. I have enough equipment, flavors and nicotine to last a long while.

Yea...I'm guessing you live somewhere where cigarettes are cheap and you don't smoke much. I was spending about $600/mo on cigarettes in Boston, transitioning to DIY and I will be saving a boat load. Already saving a bit I think, but making a lot of investments -- might break even for the first 2 months.

That's not to say...I feel like I'm spending SO much money. But if I do the math, it's the same or less, and eventually once things cool down, almost free. But I feel like I'm spending so much, since I research and spend so much time, order so many things, and keep ordering so many flavors. Even a $200 flavor order though, it will last a long time, much more than a month, and only takes 1/3 of my $600 cigarette budget. With cigarettes it's so simple, go to the gas station, buy the same thing, over and over (seems cheap but adds up so quickly).

Dang, Weazel, you must have smoked like a chimney! It's amazing how much the cigs cost. Sounds like you're vaping like a chimney now too haha. Good work. :vapor:

I don't know how most vapers can afford this habit without DIY. I only smoked about 2 packs/week and I went from spending ~$20 a week on analogs to >$60/week on juice. $20+ for a 30ml bottle is insane. And I needed at least 10 ml/day to keep me smoke free.

Sadly DIY seems to be a well kept secret. The people at my local B&M's seem to think juice making is some sort of magical wizardry that requires a PhD.

I just had a memory of my first investment in the eCigs...Blu eCigarettes. Yeah, the ads got me. Spent like $70 on that stupid pack and it broke in a week.

Luckily I live in an area with a ton of ecig stores so I quickly learned my mistake. Only back then there were new developments every few months and that got expensive too. CE5's and Egos, eVics, VAMOS, Carto tanks, Mechs with crappy RDA's that you could only use at home, fancier Carto tanks, and then finally some ProTanks and newer stuff that actually works.

I can only imagine how many people out there try the Blu's and go right back to analogs, thinking they've tried the eCig thing. I wouldn't be surprised if Big Tobacco was behind some of those companies. Seriously shady.

All very good observations Fishking. Hopefully this will help those that are considering DIY as an added pleasure to vaping. Everyone that already loves DIY found the same observations as you pretty quickly. Everyone talks about the "initial" cost of making your own juice. You can have everything you need for the same amount of money it costs for 2 or 3 cartons of cigarettes (depending on your brand). So grateful to ecf and the many other sites that help anyone learn how very easy it is to do. Happy mixing to you.

I've always wondered if they taste like crap on purpose.

I just started vaping in Mid-January and started DIY last weekend. With the Purchase of PG/VG/Nic/Flavor & now my recent flavor purchase from FW of $50, I have already broke even, compared to if I was still buying my juice from the Store. This next batches of Juice are All Savings from here forward!

Now I need to calculate it against my cigarette cost when we were smoking to see which is cheaper!

But I tried to not look at it as those vaping was going to be cheaper. Really I just wanted to "smoke" something other than a cigarette and/or quit altogether. But my woman wasn't ready to quit so we jumped onto this bandwagon! So far, we both feel much better, don't stink all the time, our Breathe smells MUCH better, don't have that cigarette "hang-over" after chain smoking a pack of cigarettes at the bar, and I don't have that darn rattle of tic-tacs in my pocket anymore!!

Glad to hear op is saving so much money compared to Cigarettes!! Crazy that you had a $600/mo habit Though!!! That's like both our Car payments!!

You can definitely spend more than your old cig habit but it's also easy to spend way less.

First hint...ignore the latest and greatest shiney gizmo and find a rig that works for you.

Second.. as the OP mentioned...DIY your own juice!

My vape expenditures run me about $60 per month on the high side and zero on the low end.

I buy liters of 100 mg nic from RTS for $50 and flavors in the 4 oz bottles at bulk prices from TFA.
I buy the PG and VG by the gallon.
I buy Kanthal from Temco for peanuts and wick also costs a pittance when you buy the 40 foot box of Cellucotton for $6 to $8 which makes over 1000 wicks (I prefer the 100% cotton version myself)

So...can you spend more? Of course!

Can you spend less? Yep!

....Just my two cents from another vaper up here in the Pocono Mountains ;)
