When I was in high school, I lived about 20min from NYC on the train.
When we would skip school (I mean, I HEARD that's what people would do when they skipped school - not that I ever did) we would take the train into the city and explore.
One of the WTC had a viewing platform that we would go to and just watch the city.
The day the towers fell, I felt like my heart was breaking.
It was not only a violation of a cherished memory of my youth, it was fear and terror and disbelief.
But afterward, it was pride and fierce joy that in the face of such pain, Americans could come together and care for each other and mourn together.
I'll never forget the strength of the emotions....
