With the rise of the electronic cigarette across the UK, US and the rest of Europe, now is an interesting time to reflect on when it all started, you have to go back to 1963 when Herbert A.Gilbert patented a device described as a smokeless non-tobacco cigarette, that involved replacing burning tobacco and paper with heated, moist flavoured air. Herbert Gilbert was approached by companies interested in manufacturing it, but unfortunately but nothing materialised and it disappeared from the public record in 1967.
It wasnt until 2003 that we saw the first generation of electronic cigarette, invented by a Chinese pharmacist Hon Lik who came up with the idea of using a piezoelectric ultrasound-emitting element to vaporise a pressurised jet of liquid containing nicotine diluted in a propylene glycol solution. The design of this produces a smoke like vapour that can be inhaled and provides a vehicle for nicotine delivery into the bloodstream via the lungs.
