USB 3.0 increased the number of wires, not the number of connectors, to make it bi-directional. The plug itself is exactly the same.

This is getting off topic but 3.0 connectors do have more pins (although they are in the same configuration for backwards compatibility). Usb 3.0 transfers data up to 10 times faster and charges at 900ma instead of 500ma (but you're right that there was a bigger difference between 1.0 and 2.0).That's flat out untrue. They have exactly the same number of pins in the exact same configuration. Buying a USB 3.0 cable is actually a scam because there's really no such thing. Where there was a difference was when we went from USB 1.0 to 2.0. They upped the wire gauge to handle the power.
USB 3.0 has a wider connector that wont fit the dna 200 port and I wouldn't recommend using 24g charge only cables. I thought the gold-plated cable I bought from Best Buy was charging properly even though it wouldn't connect to escribe. It would stay at 1.95a all the way to 95% before it started balancing at around .5a, but after a few weeks it was going to 0.00a around 94-98% and I noticed it was charging much hotter than the VS data cable (which constantly fluctuates between 0-2a up to 100% every time).
When it stopped charging at 84% last week I connected it straight to escribe and all three cells were at 4.2v but the charge estimate in device monitor was at 8.45wh... I tried setting the battery capacity to 8.45 and the device screen jumped to 100%. I was hoping that was too low though so set it back to 10.22 and changed the DM charge estimate to 10.22 manually and it jumped back to 100% and fully charged on the next cycle. It stopped at 98% the next day though so I figured maybe my battery really was 8.45wh, but tried the VS cable and its been charging to 100% at 10.22wh without getting hot since then. I don't think 24g cables allow the balancing to function properly at 2a because all the ones I own charge at a constant current (all varying widely between 1.6-1-9) while the VS cable is always balancing.
I'm not sure what usb cables you're buying but they should have the exact same connector as a 2.0 cable. Micro usb is a specification for the connector. It shouldn't vary at all.

I'd rather discuss why the VS data cable balances during the whole charge rather than just the last 5% like all of my 24g charge-only cables.

Maybe balancing is the wrong term, but it seems like the data cable is constantly monitoring cell voltage and temp while the charging cables just pump straight 1.9a current up to 95%The usb cable has nothing to do with balancing. It just provides 2a/5v power to the board which handles balancing.

I don't think it would be a bad chip since the behavior is consistent for each of the 4 cables I've tested. None of the charging cables fluctuate like the VS data cable does so either my VS cable is bad or the 2a balance charger requires a data cable to monitor the cells properly.Sounds like a bad cable or a malfunctioning chip.

Would you mind testing the short VS data cable to see if it maintains the same current with that charger?My Anker cables stay up around 1.92a - 1.95a while charging. I'm using a PowerBot PB5000 usb 5 port charger. One of the best 5 port charger that supplies 2a per port up to 4 ports simultaneously (8a total) and just happens to be very inexpensive too.
I tried charging the device from a computer USB, iPhone wall charger and a iPad wall charger with the same issue. The issue being that the battery and usb voltage's fluctuate and not in small numbers. I called vaporshark this afternoon, they basically told me this is normal and if the battery holds a charge I am in the clear to use the device. Should the voltages be changing as much as they are? My Hana 200 does not do this.
What DNA 200's do you have?I have 3 different DNA200 mods (unfortunately not a VS, all mine charge at 1 amp max). I set the charging display to show USB current. Other than at the very end I get slight fluctuations (.95-1.0 amp). I use various wall warts rated from 1-2 amps. I can understand small fluctuations, but bigger ones make me wonder what's causing it. Maybe since the VS uses quick charging, it functions differently. Now I'm curious.

Mine is extremely clicky but there's been 2 times I pressed the button and nothing happened. Never had it lock on its own set to 3 clicks.How clicky is your fire button on your VS DNA200? I just noticed mine barely clicks at all. I checked my rDNA40 and DNA40 and those fire buttons has a very noticeable click. Might be why it locks so easily?
