So my wife handed me one of our Sony VCT04 batteries, said she had just pulled it out of her purse. She said the pocket she had it in only had an old cough drop in it, but the pocket was sticky when she pulled it out. Is this just a leak? Self-venting? She didn't notice any smell.

You should always use some kind of plastic case to store your batteries.

Here are some commonly used cases specifically made for 18350, 18490, and 18650 batteries:

Clear 18650-18350-CR123 Case - RTD vapor

18490/18500 Battery Case - RTD vapor

Personally, I use these cases that I get at the Container Store (not just for batteries, but also for storing other vaping accessories): http://www.containerstore.com/shop/travel/bottlesMedication?productId=10018277&N=253

I use these for 18350 & 18490 batteries - Nalgene® .6 oz. Vial with Snap Closure:

I use these for 18650 batteries - Nalgene® 1 oz. Snap Closure Vial:

When I'm done with a battery I put it in the case upside down so I know to charge it later.
