Very first coil build - success!!!

Hey guys n girls!

Today I received in the mail, a blue anodized aluminium, smokteck rda. This is my very first rebuildable, and dripping atomizer, having never dripped before.

So I just wrapped a coil for the first time ever! I used 32guage kanthal, and four strands of 2mm silica wick. 9 wraps gave me a 1.3ohm coil, that my vamo will fire thank fully! Vapes like a freight train compared to anything else I've tried.

Pictures for your satisfaction and scrutiny. Tips and pointers appreciated!

Nope, I wrapped the wire around the silica. Using a pin down the middle to add some rigidity. Worked alright, im going to try out a micro coil next! Maybe I'll have a nack for it?

Oh I havr noticed, as there is so many wraps, that on the side of the posts, some of the coils are touching. I dont know if that is an issue or not, but it works fine and there arent any hot spots. Glows red pretty evenly.

Oops! I was trying to build a 2 ohms coil....I was wondering why I couldn't get it any higher then 1.5 ohms. Maybe the diameter of the coil is too small. Next ill try more wick to thicken it and give it more diameter. The problem I see though, is that there isn't much height between the centre posts where the coil attaches to and the base of the rda. Much more diameter and the coil would be touching a little nozzle that is positioned directly underneath it where the air flow goes. Idk if that would cause poor airflow or a short from touching the metal base. But I'll give it a shot next. And have a go at building maybe a 15 wrap micro coil for more ohms as I had no trouble at all wrapping this as is, tiny coil, and it performs quite well. It is however a little slow to heat up and requires a longer toot to get it going, maybe a second of warm up time whilst taking a draw, then its like BAM HAVE SOME VAPOUR M@!@#F!@#KER

Nope...coils touching is not an issue (and is indeed required for a micro-coil). A micro-coil is also defined by it's size (typically 16 gauge or smaller). It's a real pain to get silica through something that small so most of us use cotton but there are folks out there with more tenacity who've made silica work. I use an 18 guage blunt tip needle for wrapping. Some folks use small drill bits or similar type doo-dads.

Here's nine wraps of 30 awg around an 18 guage needle with cotton. About 1.8 ohms.

All lit up and purty...

And a 1.1 ohm dual coil freshly dry burned...12 wraps each.

All lit up...

Welcome to the wonderful world of rebuildable drippers! The Smoktech RDA is indeed a good start, Many people, including me, did not have as much luck on their first build. But you do seem to have a good grasp of the basics, so it's not that surprising. And it does look like you built a nice micro-coil.

Bit of an update...

Made another coil tonight (because im inpatient and exited to build coils). Couldn't get any higher then 1.2ohms, even with the wraps spaced apart at 9 wraps. Wondered what the go us, because I should have had a 2+ ohm coil with 10 wraps of 32 guage.

Looked at the packet the wire came in. Its NiChrome. No wonder! Oh well, I have a good performing 1.2 ohm coil now that should do me until some kanthal arrives in the mail. Noob moment right there.
