I'm interested in taking the leap into vape after years of smoking. Any suggestions on a solid setup for a novice? Without any background it's hard to tell which products are good and which are crap. I don't want to spend a lot right now, but I also dont want a POS that is going to break in a week. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm in the same boat. Day 3. I started with greensmoke kit and testing it out for a month. I'm not sure what I want yet so closest thing to analog will do for now. I'm also thinking of picking up Volcano Magma kit and try it out. One of the kits will go back, just not sure which one
Halo is good but their threading doesn't allow for much interchanging of parts from different makers. A simple ego-twist or something VV/VW would give you some control which is nice. Plus, the threading is more universal. iClear30S tanks are low maintenance with a high vape and flavor factor but it may be too big or cumbersome for your tastes. Innokin has quite a few good products and a few pen-style vaporizers that are also VV/VW. That's really about all that I have experience with.

Vaping has been a life saver for me and the only way I could successfully quit smoking! Hopefully, you have the same great same results.
I love my starter setup and still use it regularly, so I'll tell you what I started with. I have a Vision Spinner battery (900 mah), but I would recommend the 1300 mah for longer battery life. You could also go with the ego c-twist which is the same, but a different brand.
For the tank, I started with the iclear 16. It holds 1.6ml of juice (pretty small amount), but it provides a warm vape with a tighter draw that felt more like the draw from a cigarette to me.
Even more importantly, you need a good juice. I smoked menthols, so I started with Blackberry Menthol. It provided enough of a throat hit for me, but I quickly moved on to other types of juices. I found that I like sweet dessert flavors more like Boston Cream Pie, Apple Pie and Cinnamon Toasted Crunch. I just now started getting into tobacco juices and I love them. Get a bunch of different kinds of juices to start with so you can find what you like most.

Well, there are so many options out there that it can get really confusing when starting out. I did tons of research, figured out what I wanted then ended up with something completely different. My opinion is this, find a reputable local vape shop. It really helped me to be able to feel and try what I was considering. Being a heavy smoker, 2 PAD, I ended up getting a simple ego twist setup that my wife decided to try and now I have a completely different setup and a collection that is growing. But, at least here in Santa Fe, the good shop owners know a lot about what they sell and they are always happy to help out anyone who has questions. They also let me try out the systems that they had so I could see and feel the difference. Although they tend to be a bit more expensive than ordering online, starting out, it was extremely helpful to have someone guide me through my first setup.

I would have recommended Protank II but maybe the Protank III is better. I had the II and it worked good but required a lot of fiddling.

That's what I've been telling a few people who I've been trying to get to switch from analogs -- If you end up not liking it, reselling the gear will not be a problem.
I would still recommend Halo Triton systems, even though it is incompatible with 510 & eGo equipment and it is more expensive compared to other starter kits out there. My experience has been that Halo equipment just works without much fuss. The tanks don't leak and they are easy to fill without requiring needle point tips on your bottles. It produces ample vapor and provides good taste. Their eliquids are very nice too, IMO.
Once you have a Halo starter kit, you can investigate other gear at your leisure. That is the route that I happened to take when I got started; not because I was educated about vaping gear but rather, fortuitously. In hind-sight, it was the best route for me.

Finding the right type of Tank/Atomizer and juice are the core of vaping. Batteries/Mods are expensive and mostly provide the same service. Aspire, Evod and IClear offer inexpensive tanks to start with. The IClear 16 is a top coil while the others are bottom coil. The 1300 mAh batteries like the twist, spinner or winder will produce enough power to drive 1.8 to 2.4 Ohms. There is a large variety of ejuice vendors with a dizzying variety of Flavors. I would stick with mid priced vendors that offer variety/sample packs. Ahlusion, Mom and Pops, Back Woods brew, MT Baker, Heathers Heavenly Vapes, Johnson Creek and Triton are all good suppliers. As mentioned above, you will need to experiment wit PG/VG mix that appeals to you. High PG generally produces more throat hit and slightly more flavor. VG produces a thicker vapor but can mute the flavor. Have fun with it. Expect to end up with some juice that you don't like. Good luck.
I started with a KGO kit. 2 batteries (try for 900 - 1300mha for battery life), 2 Ce5 heads (upgraded to EVOD tanks, bottom fill) and a couple of different flavors. Don't go cheap and try to find "name brands" (KangerTech, Innokin, SmokTech, Volcano, etc.) There are A LOT of knock offs out there. As far as liquid goes I'm sure there are other web sites that have it but, I use EC Blend Flavors to try 5ml sample liquids and they’re inexpensive, shipping is not astronomical, and lots of flavors to choose from. Don't know how many B&M stores are near you in Colorado.
Talk to people in your area. I have a buddy that we inform each other all the time of different vendors, liquid, tanks, batteries and the list goes on and on.
Currently, I'm using Innokin VV/VW 3.0 with Kanger mini Pro Tanks. RY4 is a good "tobacco" flavor and I also vape blueberry waffle with extra maple syrup (Heather's Heavenly Vapes "Heavenly Waffle" build your own).
I started vaping Labor Day weekend and haven't has a regular cig since. Well, 2 drags 2 weeks into vaping and it was the foulest taste I've ever tasted and I smoked for 40 years.

Don't overlook Johnson Creek. They have ego sized batteries, cartomizers, clearomizers (they call canteens), and a good selection of flavors both VG only and PG/VG mixed. I use their equipment and it is high quality and reliable. They aren't the least expensive but the customer service is excellent and the products are consistantly good. They aren't the only ones I use for flavors but theirs are probably half my normal rotation of flavors.
mvp2 and a protank or an iclear, than if thats not satisfying you can grab a cheap cartomizer tank and see how that works. for not much money you will have a great vape
I have tried vapor couture, fin ecig, blue, ego ctwist with juice e from heather heavenly vales, freedom smoke and ivape. Currently smoking greensmoke due to vapor, customer service and convenience . I wish they had more dessert flavors.
