Dozed off watching TV on the couch last nite, few hours later woke up with a burning sensation on my hip.....

My mech mod somehow slipped between me & the cushion with the pinky button jammed down. Have no idea how long it was like that, but the mod was so hot I couldn't hold it, and the viva nova attached to it melted the plastic tank near the base. I think all the juice in it must have vaped, bone dry, couldn't find any residue on the cushion.

I was lucky. Many mattresses and other furniture have caught fire from smokers falling asleep, don't know if my mod was hot enough to start a fire, but being hot enough to melt a viva, perhaps so. Also glad I was using an AW IMR, other batteries just may have vented.

Damn I thought these things have an inbuilt safety-off function...
Many do. But a true mechanical doesn't. If the connection is completed ...that is it's "firing"...it fires and fires and fires...until, well. It can be a problem. You have to be careful to lock down the firing pin on a mechanical if you aren't minding it or if you are carrying it around in your pocket or purse where it could get bumped and accidentallyset it off.

maybe this will finally get through to people who think their coil will snap after more than a 3 second dry burn

Yep. Was surprised examining my melted vamo.... The wick was about 2 or 3 days old, one I had rebuilt with cotton butchers string and 32g kamthal. Surprisingly, the cotton wick had not burned thru completely, coil was still totally intact. Guess my home brew cotton wrapping skills are better than I thought. LOL.

I had a similar situation happen to me. I had not owned my small mechanical mod for very long. I had been putting it in my pants pocket while they were hanging in my locker at work and during work breaks would return to my locker for a few quick vapes. One time I went for a vape and noticed that the mod was super hot...too hot to pick up.

The fire button had become compressed in the pants pocket, shorted the battery, and it vented in thermal runaway. The end caps blew out and the plastic battery casing had melted. Below is the battery, a so-called "protected battery".

Protected battery indeed!

Unfortunately, both our incidents have a commonality..... User carelessness. I can only hope a new user learns from our common & easy to do mistakes, and treats lion batteries with the respect they deserve. There's a reason it's hard to find these batteries outside of vape and Internet shops... Liability issues! Compounding this, I see way too many posts on this forum with folks using the cheapest piece of s... chargers out there, or saving a few bucks and using noname or unrecommended batteries. What's worse is mod manufacturers that are designing and selling mods that have totally unsafe enclosures. Was looking at a smoktech Groove mod with NO venting, a bomb if the battery ever vented! Insanity!

Scuze me while I get off my soapbox.

I couldn't agree more with the above. I'm always reading of people asking for the cheapest batteries and chargers for their mods. Don't they realize how potentially dangerous these batteries can be if not used responsibly? Think how many times a day you bring your PV directly to your face. My mug's not the prettiest one around, but I'd rather it stay as it is than what happened to that Florida vapor that blew his face off using the wrong batteries.

I look at my batteries and chargers like I do the brakes in my car. I rely on them working and performing safely. I'm not about to skimp on the cheapest that I can find to save a few pennies.

I'm probably more sensitive to this issue than most because of my unfortunate incident. But having experienced that, I'm now a more responsible and wiser vapor.

Off of my rant, too.

heh - to keep in line with the theme... I used to just stick my extra 18350 in my pocket... until my keychain made a connection and I almost burned my ... leg off!
no, really! the outside of my leg started getting really hot, and I had to turn the pocket inside out and let everything drop to the floor because the metal was too hot. The insulation on the battery was half melted, but at least it didn't get to the point of splitting open.

BATTERY CASES, people. They're cheap and effective. Buy them and use them.
