I've been looking at the Groove for a future purchase. It does have 2 vent panels.
I read that post referred to about the newer model. Apparantly the new stainless steel version does not have vent panels or vent holes. Not meaning to disagree with you just to be doing it. Please show me pics or validation of their presence if incorrect.

Dozed off watching TV on the couch last nite, few hours later woke up with a burning sensation on my hip.....

My mech mod somehow slipped between me & the cushion with the pinky button jammed down. Have no idea how long it was like that, but the mod was so hot I couldn't hold it, and the viva nova attached to it melted the plastic tank near the base. I think all the juice in it must have vaped, bone dry, couldn't find any residue on the cushion.

I was lucky. Many mattresses and other furniture have caught fire from smokers falling asleep, don't know if my mod was hot enough to start a fire, but being hot enough to melt a viva, perhaps so. Also glad I was using an AW IMR, other batteries just may have vented.

This is good information; I'm sure I'm not the only one who never thought about this possibility. And I'm very happy you are ok!

BATTERY CASES, people. They're cheap and effective. Buy them and use them.

Battery Cases

I'm learning a lot from this thread, and your post makes me wonder. If you don't have a case will one of those pill zip-bags work to prevent contact? I do this when carrying around my pre-charged AA's for the camera, but they aren't L-ion, and they sit side by side with no room to get, er, connected.

This thread confirms the claims that IMR batteries can take lots of heat without venting, shooting flames, and exploding. Protected batteries or not, you need electronic safeguards. With a cutoff point, that sort of thing can go on all day without reaching the danger point.

That said, if that battery had been an unprotected Li-ion it would have likely vented and burned up the sofa. Glad you weren't injured, Light Seeker!

FWIW, I was privy to a 9v Alkaline that shorted in a friend's tool bag one day. It smoked up the bag, melted a plastic box, and burned a large blister on my friend's hand when he tried to fish it out and throw it away. If a lowly 9v can do that, imagine what a battery capable of producing 10A intermittent currents could do.

Cases are cheap enough, but as long as keys, coins, and other pocket/purse stuff can't touch the bat contacts you're fine.

Makes at least 2 of us DaveP, thanks :)

A kick would have protected me I believe, just not a fan of turning my mech into my vamo. Could be wrong, but I don't think a 2 penny fuse would have done anything. But I will NEVER again moan about the cost of AW IMR'S !!!

Roger that. I saw that Fasttech(?) were offering free cases included with battery purchases.

Much better than most of of the lame suppliers around here that don't even offer them for sale- And, and, and include crap chargers and crap batts with mods/Pv's. :(

Hate to see a fellow vaper harmed.

In a mech, a sacrificial end cap spring is wise. You probably know that it will just soften and sag at really high currents, removing the battery from the point of contact. It's a cheap way to prevent a catastrophe. You just replace the spring and you're off to the races again.

I have a box mod that uses two li-ion batts. I'm really hesitant to use it again after reading about the issues that have occurred with accidental insertion of one charged battery and one that is low in charge. Thermal runaway doesn't sound interesting to me at all.

Yup Fasttech does, not sure on all their batteries though.... and they've got lots of bats that are great for flashlights, but not necessarily vaping. I'm actually stalking the postman, ordered 4 Panasonic 18650s last week from them, cases included.

    I. Ow put the batteries in those little baggies that vendors send stuff to you in. Works just fine. But one of those battery cases would probably be a better solution.

The 18650 cases I have were $1.99 each from Provape and hold two batteries each. One plastic hinge broke after a year of daily use. They have a molded "living" hinge that eventually wears out. I just applied a double layer of clear packing tape along the hinge side to repair it and it will probably last 6 months more.

I carry an extra filled carto (with the condoms in place) and one battery in a snap top box when I go out and leave it in the console of my vehicle. You never know when you won't get back home when you thought you would. I always have a 3ml bottle of juice in my pocket.
