Hi Guys - you wanted to know how my trip was going - so here are some pix.... got to go to the Arch today, and took a ride on the riverboat as well...
the boat ride was very informative, the guide gave some great facts of the river and the commerce it spawned.... the old Mississippi was, and remains today, a major transit for goods up and down the US.
The guide touched on the rich influence that the Mississippi had on Samuel Clemmens - who wrote as Mark Twain. His pen name was taken from the particular slang of the area - a Mark Twain is a reference to how deep the water of the river was.
His most well loved character - Tom Sawyer, is also a reference to the Mississippi - a sawyer is a tree stuck in the mud of the bottom of the river.
The phrase that stuck in my head was Clemmen's comment of the Mississippi: "too thick to drink, and too thin to till." he summed it up pretty well.
Here are some photos of my excursion today....enjoy!
