At $35 the Spinner 2 is an expensive option for a VV mod with built in battery. I'd steer them toward the MVP 2 instead. Another option would be the eleaf I-stick. It's similar, but smaller and more feature packed. All 3 are within $5 of each other.

I'm thinking about buying the I-stick for an out and about solution with a small size. Provari is pretty pocket heavy and obvious when stealth vape in public.

I had the vision spinner two. I liked it but I liked the mvp2 a whole lot better! Before they get the spinner, I would have them consider getting the mvp2 instead. You can't go wrong with the mvp2. Super long lasting battery, great vape, veritable voltage and wattage durable, stylish, everything in one package! I loved my mvp2 and I used the heck out of it. Only reason I retired mine was because I started doing my own builds and needed a higher wattage device. Anyway, the mvp2 will not disappoint! It's the perfect beginners device!

Another that I've heard good things about and will probably pick one up myself for out and about is the Hybris...
Hybris eCig Mod Starter Kit
Runs around $45 for the kit (comes with a redesigned Evod) Variable Voltage at 3-6volts. Uses a 14500 battery, so it's fairly small and easy to stealth with...

There's even a thread for it here at ECF that Burnie started... he's a good guy, he'll tell you anything you want to know about it... I think he has 5 or 6 of them now... LOL

Both are good, just depends on what your friend prefers. A thin slightly long cylinder or a box. Only major difference other than the MVP being Variable Voltage is the battery life. My Spinner is 1650mAH while the mvp is 2400 i believe.

Oh and the MVP has passthrough so they can vape and charge at same time. Spinner you're waiting to vape unless they have a 2nd battery.

The Spinner 2's are good because they have a longer battery life at 1600mah than some other ego styles do. They work well and are vv. The MPV 2 is a solid choice with a proven track record of long lasting battery and rugged box as well and is vv vw. The Istick is new and does not have the proven track record but ppl are really enjoying them, and they are also vv vw. People new to this often like to emulate a cig so they lean towards the ego style but the later type is where many end up after buying various ego batteries. If your buddy can make the switch from a pen style to a box then the later options might be a better way to go, just have to let him see what works for him.

I'm happy with the 1600mah spinners we've got, we had one go on us but it was a fake for on the go, if more at home, MVP

I do like that lil Innokin VV set up with the V2 snagged on ebay and I'd liked it to start with is perfect for running around about town, and I've yet to have to go out on me...

either's a great start though...good luck to them!!
