So I just got an additional 3 tanks and now have nine more heads to liberate from the stock configuration. Just wanted to share a couple of thoughts here:

1) Open up the slot in the head - go big (Cred. to L7D4N and urquidezj

2) Use a 3mm bolt/machine screw for coil formation (Cred. to Misc ECF Members)

3) Use a plastic straw cut lengthwise for guides (Cred. to Misc ECF Members)

Use the in-place guide to thread wick material through coil after tweaking and a multimeter check.

Works great for cheesecloth and all cotton batten (and probably everything else...)

The bolt and guides cut my coil time in half. The larger hole, wick and coil benefits are obvious.

This still need some adjustment to optimize hole opening/coil diameter and amount of wick. Based upon a 3mm coil and head opening, I used a tightly compressed 3MM wick. For cheesecloth, 70 threads twisted very tight = ~3mm, batten you need really squeeze it down and roll in your fingers.

So far no leaks, I am getting monster vapor and I can can chain vape this as fast as my Provari allows. I have not had one dry hit. In fact, this may need to be adjusted down. [Edit - Cheesecloth is working much better than batten. The cotton batten in this setup is a bit too absorbent and probably needs structural support]

The other nice benefit of the larger opening lower in the head is that I do not need to notch the silicon cap. I think meatsneakers brought this question up.

Has anyone used the 3mm silica that's normally used for the Ody/Penelope to re-wick the vivi? I got tons of it and figure it wouldn't hurt to try. Would it be necessary to dremel the gaps to allow better wicking? And I know it's a small space, but have folks tried to use NR silver/nickel wire instead of running the resistance wire all the way down to the gaskets. All my stock heads end up charring the gaskets and I worry that I'm vaping rubber. Thanks and if these questions have been answered already please feel free to link away.

Here ya go. Use fingernail clippers to clip the pokey ends after you twist. By doubling up the legs, they have half the resistance, and won't get hot enough to scorch your rubber.

I don't measure, Just make the legs long and after I get it assembled into the head I bend the loop that sticks out back and forth until it breaks off.

Thanks, Bourbonman! So simple it's genius. That 200' spool of kanthal has a new purpose :)

Just got to order a torch cause the kanthal off a spool is kind of grimey with factory residue and burning it on the gas burner will lead me to a bad accident sooner or later :)

Yep, Bic is good for that. Hey, you can get the cheap knock offs and they work just as well for that. If you are going to go the SS Mesh
route, a torch is better. They have a cheapie at HD for about 10 bucks that works just fine. IMHO -YMMV. :)

What's that contraption you speak of? Is that like a flashlight? ;-)

Tried it but I find it takes forever. Might just get a small butane, blue flame lighter. I also find that if I don't light up the silica wicks before rebuilding (at least on the Penelope) that I just get a perpetual taste of silica wick over the juice flavor. It was suggested that I beat these up until they start to turn orange and it's done the trick (no more silica taste), but the bic lighter took much longer than the gas stove to get it where it needed to be. Could be in my head, who knows? Thanks, again.

A quick question i have an old dual coil carto that i took apart (burned the filler) and the heads are still working just fine(getting hot and glowing) i was thinking i might be able to use those coils if the legs are long enough as they are 3ohm coils. Any thoughts on this why it may or may not work would be appreciated. Am going to try later today.

The problem there is that i am currently unemployed and low funds. I have this avail and two hyper srt coils coming to try. Hopefully i can get one or the other to work i still have like 3 other heads that work fine so im not hurting right now so not that big of a deal if it doesnt work.

gdeal: ouch. #3 was my missing clue, thanks.

I've modded both my Vivi Tank and the nova for several months now, mostly reinventing the wheel it would appear from the others posts above!

Actually, I hate those heads. I'd love a screw-in replacement rigged with springs or screws for genesis-style replacement, (both the Tank and Nova are now sporting SS ;-)

Ok, I zoomed in and I see you interlinked the loops - and this is not the first weird-looking coil-pattern I've seen photographed on ECF - but two questions:
1) How the heck are you guys looping these oddballs? (Another was a potato-masher shape)
2) How the %^&*! are you going to run wick thru that?
3) How - because I can't visualize it - is it managing to not short?

On a late night whim, I put this coil in this vivi with 1/0 cotton wick.
I got 2.7 ohms. Just wanted to see if I could double my fun. Yup.. its a big mess, but somehow it worked with great vapor production (I am just a noob here, I probably got lucky) I have no idea whats going on inside, but will do an autopsy when it gives out.

Nothing like "Coil Master" BJ43's perfected techniques. Follow his lead....

I used two screws next to each other and wound a figure "8" and threaded the cotton wicks through the coils. This is what it looked like after it gave out. I believe Sicarius first demonstrated this configuration. His coil was much nicer than mine

It was a big PITA to do and get it right. It vaped very good, but it did not "double my fun". I would stick with BJ43's set-up. His approach is a very consistent and easier set-up that produces very good results.
