This looks like a very neat idea!
How do you keep the coils from touching each other? I've been toying with an idea of cutting a second pair of slots at 90 degrees, only not as deep, and running a second wick above and across the first one, but I think I'd have leakage if I trimmed the silicon cap.

By very carefully adjusting them after it gets inserted into the cup. but mostly because the cup's ID is so much larger there is plenty of room in there. The stock cup's ID is about 5mm. this one is 7mm.

hey guys thanks for all the info about the rebuilding of the nova, but im a nood when it comes to this, what is hot legs? Is the + & - end of the kanthal?

Both ends of the resistance wire (Kanthal or Nicrome) heats up (i.e. "hot legs"); there's no need to worry which the positive or negative end of the wire. You just need to double the wire are both ends by folding then twisting these so that the current would be able to flow with half the resistance and thus heats less.

Exactly. if the "legs" get hot, they will burn the rubber gasket that holds them in contact with the pin or side of the coil cup. Plus you want the resistance (and therefore heat) to be on the wick making tasty vapor.

thanks for clarifying, so based on what gummy said il just make it a little longer, fold it over nd twist to avoid it heating up?

I turned it on my old "GrandMa" lathe with diamond bits. then cut the metal off of the stock head just at the bottom of the 2 slots so there was a small lip that went up into the stone. Then used a small bit of JB Weld to hold it all together. Modded a carto condom for a top seal. Cutting/adjusting the deck height was done after the turning but before gluing. The ID is step cut. the very bottom is the OD size of the stock head. then the rest is 7mm.

Thanks Gummy for your secret's... That helped alot. One thing good about the Permastone is that I can cheat, I made a form of the head where the slots are and Then I will have to drill it out a little more and make slots in that. After I get my height just right I will glue it and hopefully it will work when all said and done.

Well like they told me,,, Pics or it didn't happen.

That's right! I can't tell you how many awesome stories I had from college I tried to tell my friends after getting back, but they never believed me :(

Would you think a thin silicon coat on the inside of the chamber achieve the same desired effect? I'm hesitant to try because I'm unsure what silicon would do under a high temp environment directly adjacent to a glowing coil...

I will try some JB Weld tomorrow and let you know in a day or two. (after the glue drys,, damn. Did I mention I hate that part?)

Yeah, I'm not too keen on JB Weld. My cinnamon liquid literally ate through it after I used it to seal the posts in a Genesis Mini. I had JB Weld floating around in my tank on the third day. Silicon worked on it and is holding up, but I'm just not too sure on it having to endure the heat output of a coil in the nova...

Take a small blob of the silicone you want to use and put it on top of a coil you're going to replace anyway, and do a dry burn..:) (I love experiments) Remember we want pictures....:lol:

I'll do this tomorrow. I found my tube of silicone this afternoon, and it had a small crack towards the bottom, and feels all dried out.

@notsmoking

Your cup/head looks great. What type of glue are you using to hold it together?
