Different path to the same destination. I prefer watts myself. I messed with voltage for a bit, but I prefer the laziness of set and forget. For my juices I have found the best setting for each and I simply set it when I put a tank on and go. Doesn't change alot on me as my coils wear. Voltage I seemed to always want to fiddle with it, and I guess I just got tired of it. Not really sure why I had to fiddle, probably because of coil wear, but I like the cruise control of a variable wattage device. That's also why I refuse to buy a Provari. When they make one in VW, I'll probably be on it like a fat kid on the last cupcake.

They're actually different from what I've heard. They cannot both be set at the same time. It's either one or the other. I prefer volts as it's easier for me. But watts should be set at 6-8 for the sweetest hits.

Depends on you, juice, coils, wick material, etc. for the "sweet spot". I personally never vape over 6.5 watts and find I enjoy my setups between 4.5 - 6.0 watts.

Like Keefers, I like to use watt control for the convenience. Many swear by volt adjustment, claiming it allows for more fine tuned control (.1 V adjustments), but my palette is not sensitive enough to appreciate that sensitivity so watt adjustment works for letting me dial in the vape.

As a note, devices that let you adjust both don't apply both of those settings at once - watts, by definition, adjust the output voltage, irrespective of whatever you've set the voltage to.

I have variable wattage on one mod and never use that mode. I have variable voltage on five mods and use that exclusively.

All of my juice attachments are between 2.0 and 2.5 ohms. Not a big difference there to need variable wattage to "set and forget" when I change tanks.

I change flavors 3 - 4 times a day, and make voltage adjustments for each one's sweet spot. So the set & forget of VW wouldn't benefit my vaping habits.

My mods are set somewhere between 3.7 volts and 4.4 volts.

Volts squared divided by the coil resistance equals watts.

Watts is a measure of power -- how much energy per second you are forcing into your coil -- and energy is what heats up the coil.

So setting your device in watts mode gives you the same heating effect, no matter what the coil resistance. You can set it and forget it... Except in practice you may find you want to heat up different coils at different rates, or some coils may cool at a different rate than others due to their size differences. You may find that controlling the volts gives you more of a feel for the control.

If I'm understanding yall you adjust the vv and the vw just to make it taste better

Replace and with or. It's not just to taste better though. Taste is part, but for me it's taste, temperature, amount of vapor produced, and general longer life of my coils.

Alright so when you get to that stage it just makes for a better experience

Exactly. Then moves again from there. Bottom line though, is don't get overwhelemed thinking there is always going to be something better, or a better way to have YOUR experience. Start little and slow, and if you find what you like and works for you then great. If you think your setup isn't working, try to pinpoint what it is that you don't enjoy and then move to something else that solves that problem. A lot of folks here may say Buy a Provari and get a Kayfun. That very well may be where you end up, but why spend $300+ when a simple $50 vision spinner and Mini Protank might make you just as happy?

so there is no real time and place for either mode and most devices just have both options to cater to different preferences?
I think most devices have both because the first ones that came out let you change your volts, and if they took that away and only put watts controls on devices people would freak out because people hate change and it scares them. It's just two different number sets that adjust the exact same thing in the exact same way, higher is more heat on coils, lower is less heat.
