VooPoo Drag X3 (USB issues)

I need help getting my voopoo drag X3 to connect to my PC. It's only two days old, but the software constantly says, 'Not Connected' and the computer won't recognize the USB device. The original cable broke, so I am using a 5V/2A Type-C gaming mouse cable. It charges the mod fine but won't data-sync. Any ideas on how to get it to connect?

Sounds like the cable is probably the issue honestly. A lot of USB-C cables are charge-only and don’t carry data, especially random gaming/peripheral cables.

If the mod charges but the PC doesn’t detect anything at all, I’d first try:
    • a proper data transfer USB-C cable
    • different USB port
    • another PC if possible
Also worth noting some Voopoo devices are really picky with cables for firmware/software connections. Plenty of people have had charging work fine but no data connection.

Generally, your cheaper USB C cables are for charging only and are not designed for data transfer. Look online for USB C data cables. These can be used for both charging and data transfers. There are different types of data cables as well with USB 2 coming in at a paltry 480 Mbps to Thunderbolt/USB 4 at a sizzling 40+ Gbps.

Look for terms like USB 3.2 Gen 2, USB4, or Thunderbolt. This indicates data capabilities which means the cable is not for charging only.

I have tried all varieties of high and low end USB cables. most don't have issue with the drag x2, but the x3 gets detected, but not recognized... almost like a driver issue. When using cables that do work. Device manager shows: Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)
An even bigger issue than that, though, is that the updated firmware files for these devices aren't even available on voopoo's site.

Quick search for the Drag X3 and X2 shows software version v2.0.0.3 from 2021.4.15 is available on the VooPoo website.

I was able to download it to my Mac - I don't do Windows - and don't own any VooPoo mods. LOL

    link:

Scroll down and click on Drag series. You will see the X2 and X3. Click on one of those and you will see the link to download the sw.

I would not try updating the X2 or X3 firmware until you get your Window's issues resolved to where your PC recognizes the mod.

So... y'all have tried different "known good" data cables, as Ret1 suggested.

Try your mod on another WinBlows PC. If the mod is recognized on another PC then you have issues with your PC.

    Good luck!

Connecting the X3 to a PC

"Use the original proprietary USB-C cable."

    also...

"While the physical port on most Voopoo devices is a standard USB-C shape, many Voopoo mods use non-standard, proprietary wiring inside their cables."

IOW... If you don't have the original proprietary USB-C cable that came with the device, you're screwed.

You might have to purchase another X3 (and be very careful with the cable).

Yes, the software is available and I have that. But they do not have the firmware files posted for the drag products. They have them listed for many other products, but not the drags.

I have the OG cable, its literally brand new, came the other day. But the firmware design is awful, many issues with the "lock" features, settings resetting themselves, etc. I've seen posts about firmware updates fixing it. If these files aren't available then this X3 device is the worst voopoo device Ive ever owned out of at least 20. Much happier with my Drag X2, just wish it had a wattage lock.

I did find the Thunderbolt 5 on Amazon, would that be ok?

    No, it will not work.

Per my last post, VooPoo uses a proprietary USB-C cable, meaning the pinouts on the mod (and their cable) are not the standard USB-C pinouts.

There are a few threads about it on Reddit. No one has been able to use any other USB-C type cable with the X3.

You need to use the cable that comes with the VooPoo Drag X3. Unfortunately VooPoo does not sell their proprietary cable separately.

As I see it, the only options are to place a Wanted listing in the ECF classifieds for a VooPoo Drag X3 or the cable. Purchase a new X3. Or buy a different mod that doesn't require a proprietary cable.

In my experience, if a company is unresponsive with resolving mod settings issues via firmware then it is likely in our best interests to move on from said company and find one who designs/sells a mod with the desired requirements/settings.

    IOW... research. LOL

From what I see, the Geekvape Aegis Solo 3 is comparable to the X3.

There are two versions. One with an internal 3000mAh battery and the other is for a single external 18650 battery.

With the Solo 3 you can lock the wattage.

"To lock and unlock the wattage on your Geekvape Aegis Solo 3, press the + (Up) and - (Down) adjustment buttons simultaneously for 2 seconds. This toggles the adjustment buttons between locked and unlocked so you don't accidentally change your power settings."
