Have had my Amigo for about a week now and was loving it when I decided to try it on my SplitFire at 1.7ohms and it didn't work right. Tried it on two wall adapters and woudln't work at all (500ma). I rushed to open a ticket as I was at the end of the 14 day warranty (the priority mail package took a week to get here). Well after researching a bit I find what I should've known all along: it is best to use a 2 amp adapter with the Amigo and it won't work at all at 500 ma.

My first question then is: Can I use this one (rated at 2.1 A) with the Amigo: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Dreamgear...gMethod=Recommendation:wm:RecentlyViewedItems ?

My 2nd question is: Can I use the 2/2.1 amp adapter with any other passthrough battery such as the SLB ego-V 650mah and the ego-T PT?

Cheers!!

All I use is wall warts that are 2 amp for any of my PT's Orbach. Make sure if you're going to use a car adpater for your PT's that it's a 2amp one too. Pass thru's are a great thing to use when you go on a trip. (I always have a PT in my car ) Saves battery life in your other batts while driving along :D

Also, can I use the 510 charger on a 2.1 amp wall adapter to charge my 650mah Spinner?
I dunno nuttin bout da spinners

Devices, such as the Amigo or a Spnner as examples... will only "pull" as much current as they require as long as the current is available to them. The Amigo will ( as mentioned ) need up to 2A or so.... so the USB power supply will need to provide at least up to that amount. The Spinner is typically charged with only around 450mah.... so a 2A USB power supply can easily provide that amount since it is under 1/2 A of current.

Another way to look at this... You can screw in a 60w, 100w, 120w or 200w light bulb into a typical light socket... just because the socket can provide more power than the 60w bulb needs doesn't mean it will be brighter but the other bulbs will be up to the wattage they can provide. If the light socket could only provide the power needed for a 60w bulb... then the other bulbs could get no brighter than what the 60w would provide.

In summary.... the power supply will be able to provide enough current up to their rated amount... the devices will only pull as much current as they need as long as the power supply can provide that amount.

i got a "portable" wall adaptor thingy from wallmart for under ten bucks. it has 2 ports one labled 2.1 amp but it put out the same on either one but if you plug in 2 things it splits the current (i think). works great with my piper passthrough but i really have mostly just been using it as an extra phone charger
and it got good reviews too lol

Thanks everyone. I have read postings that advise against plugging a lower rated battery into a higher rated charger, say a 350mah battery on a 500mah charger. That was the source of my confusion.

Edit: Why then does everyone recommend against using an Ego charger on a 510 battery? I guess I'm still confused

A power supply for a device is not the same as a charger for a battery....

A charger needs to "know" what amperage rate a battery can handle in order that it doesn't overcharge the battery. The cheapy eGo/510 chargers are not intelligent enough in that regard so they assume you aren't plugging in a battery they are not rated to charge. A safe amperage charge rate is typically equivalent up to the MAH that the battery has as it's capacity. Better quality batteries can often take more, but never assume that just to play it safe unless you know for certain. So a safe rate for a typical 650mah eGo... is 650mah. Most eGo charges are rated at 450mah which is well under the max supported for a 650mah battery. A typical 510 battery is usually no lower than 180mah so their chargers aren't rated as high as the eGo chargers.

Thanks rdsok. Let me see if I got this right. The wall adapter is a transformer/power supply that provides as much current to a load as it demands up to a maximum, e.g. 2 amps or 500 ma depending on the adapter. The passthrough batteries like the SLB ego-V have a built in charger that draws enough current from the power supply to charge its associated battery and it knows how fast/slow to charge said battery. In the case of the 510 and Ego batteries, the charger is a separate unit and it must be matched to the battery it is charging or it may charge too fast (which can be dangerous) or too slow (which would take longer to charge).

For the Amigo there is no battery so there is no charger but only a protected circuit that allows for 4 voltage settings (5 if you count 0 volts when turned off). The Amigo will provide at each voltage setting (except 0 v of course) as much current as the coil resistance demands. with protection for excessive current, ie, a short or too low resistance.

With the Amigo set at 3.0 volts, the 1.7ohm SplitFire may be too low a resistance so the Amigo detects a short and shuts off. Or it may nor be able to provide the current the coil demands and shuts off. It must be one of these two, barring a malfunction of the Amigo which I dismiss because it works fine with higher resistances. I will find out which it is once I have the 2.1 Amp adapter.

I can't say anything about using a 1.7 ohm on the Amigo, the lowest I tried was a 1.8 and I do know that works on mine. The Amigo also has a max current limit... I can't recall what that limit was but want to say around 2a, we'd have to re-read the alpha thread to find out what we found... and I'm not up for that... :D

I understand what you said and for the most part you are correct. I'd suggest a slight ( picky ) rewording about the power supply... They can provide up to their maximum rated current as apposed to saying an amount like 2.1a or whatever since different ones will have different ratings. USB power supplies that I'm aware of currently aren't going over 2.1a but that may change "tomorrow"

There are powerful wall chargers out there with the ability to charge multiple devices simultaneously, like this one:
Amazon.com: Skiva PowerFlow QuadFire (4 Amps / 20Watt / Fastest Speed) Four Port USB Wall/Travel/AC Rapid Charger for iPhone 5 4 4s 3, iPad 3 2 1, iPod, Samsung Galaxy Tab, Android Smartphones and Other USB Devices (Universal Compatibility): Kindle S

but each USB port is limited to maximum 2.1 amps even though the charger itself is rated at 4 amps.

And yes, I agree with you the wording was not technically accurate. I did mean "maximum rated current" of the adapter.

English is not my first language so once in a while or maybe so much more often than that I will say things in a rather convoluted and confusing way with all good intentions and end up confusing everyone including myself, who am so easily confused to begin with even if once in a blue colored moon I will have a lucid moment.

Yea, just like that, my apologies!! LOL!
