You might need to narrow down what you are looking for to get a lot of good answers. Mods covers a lot of territory. Personally, I like box mods and am starting to lean more towards the variable voltage mods like Little Sister and Big Brother. I've made myself a VV Puck which I really like with the new CE2 cartos. If you're interested in making something yourself, check out the Battery section in the Modders Forum, too many ideas floating around in there!

I don't have any tubular mods so my opinion on them isn't worth much, but I'm sure someone will pitch in here shortly.

My opinion, when looking at mods you need to start with battery life. If you don't mind carrying a couple of small batteries with you, a small mod that uses 10440 batteries may be perfect as they are usually tiny. I have a mod made out of a lighter, very small. If you want something that lasts all day you might want to look at either multiple battery mods, or the big battery mods that use the 18650 batteries, some of those can last for days but they are usually huge.

I have an Indulgence and a Buzz and I use the Indulgence more than the Buzz. The Buzz does have a variable voltage but it takes a small screwdriver to adjust the voltage which is a pain for me so I leave it at about 4.5 volts and it doesn't hit any better than the Indulgence. The Indulgence with the extended cup can use the 18650 2000 mah batt that will last a couple of days or use two 3v batts for 6v. You can use the shorter cup with a single 3.7 900 mah batt if you want to use a smaller PV and it has adaptors for all types of connections. All this being said an ego or likewise setup with a mega atty and 900 or 1300 mah battery is about as good as you are going to get. It is nice to have them all because I seem to change favorites everytime I get something new. lol I also have a 1300 ego, 1300 Riva and a 1300 Hello 016. I also have a couple of ego 900 mah and 650 Riva's. Right now my favorite is the 1300 ego which slimmer than the other 1300's and you can use the mega attys and carts with it. With the Mega Atty it is the same length as the buzz or Indulgence with an 801 atty on them.

Take a look at my The Wonderful World of Mods: An Illustrated Guide thread in the ECF Library. It offers seven parameters to use when selecting among mods and provides examples (including up-to-date prices and links to relevant suppliers) with, of course, lots of photos.

The post on the Voltage parameter talks about batteries (and combinations thereof) and the LR and HV attys to use with various voltage levels.

the 2 I personally think are the tops is the ali'i Welcome to R&R Manufacturing - Handcrafted Battery Box Mods (handmade exotic wood box mod with a bottom juice feeder)
and the precise 18650 Super T Manufacturing, Innovative manufacturer of electronic cigarette products. (all mechanical, all stainless, and lifetime warranty (and a juice feeder soon to be coming out))

myself I find the strict 5V route limiting as far as what atties work well...battery choice is kinda meh...

the 18650 battery size is going to give you the longest runtime and sufficiently power whatever atty you throw at it... and anything that fits an 18650 for 3.7V is generally going to fit stacked 16340 batteries for either 6V or 7.4V..

I use an SP2 and love it! I used to use a kr808 and it worked ok... but all went down hill mid day when the battery when out. now the sparkplug dosent ever die on me...ever...always makes it a day even when im using it heavy. vapewithpuff had a good review in her blog which led me to order some high drain battery's. smoke literally barrels out of this thing! i ordered from vapornine...there the best.
