I agree "better safe than sorry." The reason I brought it up is because my son is an electrician with a lot of experience on new builds as well as the consequences of bad wiring. That's why I brought it up. If that's home-job wiring that hasn't passed inspection, which the proximity to the corner says it may be although I'm not aware of Australian building requirements, then it could be implicated in the problem. The OP is not the person this happened to, btw, and its my understanding does not know these particulars. I, however, just happen to be interested in them as I would be in any user-error.

I like the xtar Chargers, I have the 2 Battery and the 6 Battery Charger.

xtar has been around longer then Nitecore and I've never encountered anyone who's had a mishap with an Xtar.

BTW if my recollection is correct and you check the xtar charger it outputs higher Mah than the Nitecore and will charge batteries faster.

Bump...

Also, IMHO, I think most people are seeing the photo on too great of a scale. I say it's a shelf on a book case: the white cylinder is the vented 350 battery and the material it's sitting on is a plastic package of shelf-paper. You can also see the shelf support at the top of the photo. So, as someone else posted, it's more like a crack-shelf instead of a crack-house. :)

The XTAR VP1 (which I have) has a button to set the charge rate at 250ma, 500ma, or 1amp. Even the 1amp setting is fine but if you have the time, the lowest (slowest) setting is better for the batts. And I second the notion that XTARs are fantastic. I love the LED readout with built-in volt meter... so convenient to see the batt's volts right there in the charger. Also feel totally comfortable leaving the batts in the charger overnight and unattended as it's made for that, unlike other chargers.

Just saw this... Glad nobody got hurt here...

I had a similar event with a trustfire charger and Efest batteries... The batteries were fine, but the charger started spewing out a black powdery substance, most likely a capacitor venting off... Threw the Efest batteries on my meter to test their voltage at the time of the incident. They weren't hot at all, and the voltage was within the normal specs. But I don't trust anything now that ends in "Fire" and certainly won't use anything other than AW or Efest batteries.

Some of the stuff out there is just dangerous
