Does anyone know the success rate to get tobacco free using e-cigs? I suspect it's pretty high. It's the ONLY thing that has ever worked for me....like a new lease on life.

In the US e-cigs aren't recognized for that purpose. I think South Africa released numbers that indicated 45%? But I don't know what the criteria was.

Was talking about this a few weeks ago with my friends son, who said his college economics prof did a lecture about this very topic. He said one of the things the professor talked about was how much the cig taxes directly effect the economy, and how without them [cig taxes], the nations economy would take a HUGE hit, that would have implications on more things then you could possibly imagine. Potentially catastrophic to the already shaky economy. Basically, there is such an ungodly amount of money raised from those taxes, that they couldn't ban cigarettes even if they wanted to.

Another college professor that doesn't get it then. It's almost laughable. At the rate of spending going on right now cig taxes are like a drop of water in the ocean - maybe a little splash - tops.

Don't get me wrong, they'd squeal at any drop in revenues like a.... well you know the analogy and it fits.

Somewhere between 13 and 15 Billion packs of smokes are sold in the US annually. At a buck a pack in federal tax, that's a hefty chunk of change.

Doh, I just googled the federal budget, never mind.;)

Lol. And that doesn't even consider the overall debt - bumping against 13 tril., which also doesn't take into account unfunded mandates which is over 8x that amount by some estimates. Again, they would take notice and take action most likely but not because it would affect the economy of the nation so much as the 'economy of the bureaucracy'. Jimmy Carter, iirc, got rid of the draft in what mid 70's. the Selective Service agency still exists. We had helium reserves for the dirigibles for WWI that still got subsidized as late as the 90's that I know of and perhaps even today. I could go on but I won't ;-) Hardly nothing (prohibition being an exception and then only in part) is ever repealed in gov't, because their is a 'self interested' sector of the aparacheks that are involved and the same would be for the cig tax. Now if they laid of say 333,000 gov't employees as a result of losing the tax - that would have some effect on the economy - they'd have to raise other taxes to pay for 2 years of unemployment, which then would kill even more jobs. lol
