WARNING: Vinegar is BAD for Carto Tank O-Rings

Did a bad thing. Got some Carto tanks off the Classified, had a smell of the juice that was used in them, hot water did not clean them. So I decided I would clean them with Vinegar, BAD IDEA. Ruined the O-rings. Not something good to do, see picture below. Live and learn.

Oh gosh, so sorry, that's a lot of rings to ruin at one time. How many tanks did you get?

It was only 8, but there are 4 o-rings each, so that is 32 total. On another note, I had some EVOD's and Protank's in there also and it didn't seem to hurt the seals in them (the white ones), but I haven't tried them yet.

Hopefully no one will discount the DIY possibilities of vinegar. I use one drop per 3ml in my bakery/savory recipes with grand success.

I use el cheapo vodka for o-ring cleansing.

Clear alcohol is a better way to clean carto tanks that stink from juice.

Just figuring out the sizes looks like a big chore if you plan to buy new ones.

I had a rebuildable CE5 soaking all night in vinegar to try and get rid of a bad tobacco taste, and when I took it out I noticed a bit of tarnishing on the inner metal cylinder. I rinsed and wiped it off as best I could, I figure I left it soaking too long. When using something strong like vinegar/alcohol, it's probably better to not leave it too long.

Good to know. Dang that would suck. I just use very hot water on my good tanks and I do on the cheap ones too. I let the cheap ones dry out for 3 days before I try to use them. You know when they are bad and you clean them and you shake the hot water around and it comes out the bottom. I am getting down to my last two when they crap out then I get two more better tanks that I can clean better. That's just how it works for me. I clean my battery with a q tip and a little alcohol on the connections. No problem there either. I am really new to this I take advise from my son. And what he has told me has worked. Hope this might help you also.

Sorry your orings got melted. But its good to know what happens with vinegar. With some carto tanks , I think Kir Fanis is one of them, they say to rinse your tank with vinegar before use. I never did, I just use hot tap water. I suppose they mean use it watered down, but they dont give details. It would have been terrible to finally get your imported 50-70 dollar tank in after foreign shipping time and mess it up before even using it.

To my t-buds, it 'elevates' da flavs within da recipe. Really can't say 'pops da flavs', to avoid over expectations. But vinegar does help!

BTW, I use lemon juice to 'elevate' my fruit/berry recipes. Again, one drop per 3 ml.

Yep, I was ...... at first, I let them soak for like a week because I didn't have time to deal with them. This weekend I had time, time to dig all the crapped o-rings out of the ends, yes I was ...... at myself, but I am over it. Just wanted to let others know so they didn't make the same mistake as I did.

Soaked a week?

Straight Vinegar removes Lime/calcium deposits. Guess it also depends on the o-ring compound. Maybe pure rubber?
