I've seen that sort of thing for distilling your own alcohol from fermented sugar/yeast solutions... If you aren't in a rush, something similar should work in a clear container instead of the pot left on a sunny window sill... With the stove, don't know how much you are paying in electricity... I think a gallon of distilled water at the grocery store is about $1US...
