House passes bill giving FDA power over tobacco ads, sales - CNN.com

The Family Smoking Prevention and tobacco Control Act, which now moves to the Senate for further consideration, would allow the FDA to restrict the marketing of tobacco and ban candy-flavored cigarettes.
It would also allow the agency to regulate nicotine and other ingredient levels, as well as force greater disclosure of the contents of tobacco products.

CNN doesn't understand how this type of control in the FDA's hands would affect people like us. With the passing of this bill, e-cigarettes would fall under the direct control of the FDA. While I would love to believe that the FDA has my best interests at heart, I know that is totally untrue. They are in the pocket of RJ Reynolds and pharmaceutical companies who want their products promoted. Companies that have no interest in us having safer smoking alternatives.

This legislation has PASSED in the house of representatives, and is now headed to the floor of Congress. If we fail to stop this measure, it will head to Obama's desk for his signature.

This must be stopped.

My friend and I have devised one campaign we want to persue, and we need your help. Part of the problem of this legislation is that WE are not being represented. We are nameless, voiceless and faceless. The people who are going to vote on this do not know we exist.

So here's my request for your help. I would like for everyone to create a 30-45 second video explaining what e-cigs mean to you, and why the FDA must be stopped from taking away our freedoms just to fill the coffers of cigarette companies. We want our representatives to know that we believe the recent siezure of e-cigarette products was an illegal and unconstitutional action by the FDA. Also, that we have a right to freedom, and that freedom includes the right to choose a safer alternative to smoking or dangerous drugs. We know that smoking kills. We know that the drugs to help us quit kills. The FDA says that we can't have e-cigarettes because we don't know how dangerous it MIGHT be. Compared to the alternatives.....GIVE ME MY DAMN E-CIG!!

Once you have created your video, upload it to youtube and post the link here, or email it (the link...not the video) to mvancil at gmail dot com.

We will be compiling the videos to be sent to congress before the vote.

As much as I like Obama, I fear that he may be willing to sign anything anti-tobacco, almost as a compromise to offset his history as a naughty smoker! Makes him look better to the antis etc.

3 years on, he gets special presidential ciggies from BT that are as strong and tasty as the ones he's always enjoyed, while Joe Q Public puffs away on 3 times as many lower-nic gaspers. In between breaths from an oxygen tank.

Why am I in a cynical mood?! I need to chill! *glugs a frosty Bud*

And 3 years from now, that frosty Bud will cost you 10x what it costs today - becuase the sin tax is coming next to that....There's noise in Wisconsin that they're going to raise that tax next.

Also in the crosshairs: anything that makes you fat, because us cellulite-gifted persons are contributing more to global warming than you skinny ones......

I'm sure that caffiene and sugar will have their day, too.....eventually.

Oh everything will, in a bizarro world way of being 'fair'. Instead of letting people pick their poison, there won't be any poisons left at all. After cigarettes comes food and liquor, then comes gambling, then comes sex outside of marriage, then comes sex outside of procreation then comes the entire act itself. Families & friendships will follow. Anything to keep people from focusing on anything other than the PTB.

I've always been on the side of Orwell in the 1984 vs. BNW arguement. People with broken spirits will always be more obedient because contrary to popular belief it breeds lethargy, not rebellion.

Orwell, got the year wrong, but it's coming. The new generation will not know what hit them. It is a old book now.

Anarchy? Revolution? Blood in the streets? Them's scary thoughts.....and that's what it's going to take to institute a new Government because there are too many sheeple out there who will vote for every glitzy hyped up candidate that comes across.....

our forefathers new it would one day come to that ....hence their words

They're supposed to be remaking the film next year. Unfortunately it would probably bomb if it ever got a wide release (which it wouldn't) because most people would find it too depressing/not understand it.

I'm not ready to live in an anarchist state - you think you've lost your free will? You don't like the nanny state - the .... storm that would follow a revolution would be infinity2 worse...

That's wierd - I didn't post that, Walkman did....

And, yes, I do agree that when greed entered the picture, our staid, measured, working government system started to degrade....and now, when it's old and bloated on its own excesses, we struggle to find a spark of hope in the mountains of decay.

That's wierd - I didn't post that, Walkman did....
