It does happen. I have had them. I stopped drinking 25 years ago and still have them sometimes as well. It usually has to do with stress for me.
Weird dreams about smoking.

I dream about vape gear almost every night. Either shopping for it, buying it or building it.
Odd that this question would come up today of all days.
I had NOT had a dream about smoking until last night. I was trying to buy a couple of packs of cigarettes and handed over $5.00. The girl kept looking at me and waiting so I handed her another $5. Again, she waited and looked so I handed yet another $5. And again. I was astounded in the dream that it cost so much. After buying the cigarettes I realized that I didn't smoke and needed to buy juice but hadn't a clue where to get it. It was only a brief moment in the dream so it passed quickly.
Upon awakening I realized that cigarettes really ARE that expensive in a lot of areas and I was puzzled that it confused me in the dream.

I had these sorts of dreams about the same time frame as you from when I stopped smoking. The dreams lasted for a couple of months and I had them 2 to 3 times per week. They were extremely vivid. So vivid that sometimes when I awakened, I would actually believe that I MUST have smoked a cigarette in my sleep. (seeing as how there were no cigarettes in my house, this would have been impossible). But I swear, I could still taste and smell them from my dreams for about 3 to 4 seconds after I first woke up!
My Papa, (dead now 10 years at age 90), had quit smoking long before I was born. He once told me that even tho he had not smoked for over 50 years, he still had the occasional dream about smoking.

I've never had smoking dreams but I have recovering alcoholic friends who've described their drinking dreams... in vivid detail. LOL They said those dreams really scared them because they thought it meant they would start drinking again. Without exception, their sponsors told them they were normal in the early days. Just hypothetically, I've heard many, many, times that there are types of dreams ( some really weird) in which we're "working things out" that we can't or won't do while awake. I know I've had those. I pummeled an ugly rusty-colored monster in one of mine... violence is very uncharacteristic of me and it really scared and upset me. Turns out I had a co-worker named Rusty that I really couldn't stand and after the dream they weren't as hard to deal with! All in hind sight of course but just sayin.... 
I am laughing because I also have been dreaming pretty much the very same thing! I also am always trying to show people in my dreams things they should buy to vape. I think I spend too much time on this forum and googling vape stuff!
