What advantage of manual over auto?

I just bought a 510 pssthrough and it's a manual (annoyingly I have to put a pencil battery in) my last passthrough was a dse901 and had no switch on it.
What's the maijn difference? Why do some have switches?

Basically, manual = user control; auto = battery chip control. Auto = hands free.... see:
