When I started vaping I coughed up a lung too ;) Your lungs need to heal. I'm assuming your not smoking cigs now? When I went back and forth it hurt more. Once I got off the cigs and was just vaping my lungs felt better and I was able to take more and more vapor in. Plus I started with 70pg/30vg way too high PG even for me now. I only use 50/50 or 20/80. Your nic level sounds fine for how much you smoked. Good luck take it slow, your lungs will catch up and then it wont hurt anymore. Plus I found the better juice I bought also helped. I use Space Jam Juice and Vapergate.

Take the dropper tip off first? I didn't know that. It didn't come with instructions. THANK YOU for telling me that. Man, what a noob I am. That would be much easier than my loading up a syringe and doing it that way.

OK, I've been practicing. Little draws, shorter, and a bit of suck before I press the button. I think the wicks were dry, because it seems much smoother now, however, I don't like the tobacco flavor. I guess it just needs to sit for a while. The wintergreen is tolerable, but I guess it will need to sit as well. Or I'm just going to have to put my big girl panties on and get over it, because I'd like to not have to use my lighter again.

I think I'm getting more than enough nicotine, because I have a little headache now. (I hate headaches!) My husband got dizzy just standing near the pantry where the bottles are sitting. I have to say, that cupboard really smells bad right now. Like an old, unwashed ashtry. Is that the nicotine level being too high? Maybe we need to thin this stuff out. I was going to give hubby my two bottles of tobacco for his e-pipe that he's ordered, and just stick to other flavors myself. However, he can't handle the nicotine level in this liquid, so I guess we'll order some glycerine and cut it 50/50. This seems simple to me, but correct me if I'm wrong - if we took 15 ml of the (50/50, 18 mg) tobacco e-juice and added 15 ml of vegetable glycerine, we'd end up with 30 ml of e-juice that was 25% PG, 75% VG, and 9 mg nicotine. Yeah, the flavor would be less, too, but it would be workable, wouldn't it? The funny thing is we only got these 6 hours ago, and already my husband is talking about making our own liquids. I think maybe we should stick to pre-made for a while, until we know what we really want. But someday, yeah, I think I'd like to make our own.

I would LOVE to try creme de menthe, but I've heard it needs a glass tank and mine's plastic. I need to order a couple. How many would a person reasonably need to have on hand? I really have no idea. Two? Three? Eight? Depends on how many different flavors I want? It would be so much easier if I liked the tobacco flavor, I'd just stick with that. Maybe it will get better with age, though. In the meantime, I'm TRYING to just use the e-cig, but it still tastes pretty icky to me. I've had a couple of regular ones so far since we got the e-cigs and put them together, but that's much better than what I would have smoked normally.

I haven't made a dent in the juice in the tanks yet, so I don't think I'm doing it *right* yet, but I'll get there. I have to take baby steps. :)

Welcome to the group. I hope things work out for you. I quite the day I purchased my ego kit.. I smoked menthol for over 30 years. I purchased my ego one day at the tobacco store as I was going to get a carton of Virginia Slims 120. We are retired and I was already thinking of how much money was in the ash tray so decided to try the vp. The clerk gave me menthol and told me it would not taste like I was smoking.. He was right..lol It was terrible.. I made up my mind and my husband purchased a fruit flavor for me. It took me awhile before I enjoyed it. I never smoked a stinkie after purchasing the vp.. My husband is trying to adjust to the vp, but he is having a hard time and still smokes about 3 to 5 a day.
Wishing you all the best.\
You have joined a great group of people that are willing to help in any way..

Hi Lannie, and welcome to ECF!

Asking about the proper number of devices or toppers is a recipe for many disparate answers here. Personally, I have something like 20 toppers and 10 devices--and I'm on the tame side from some others around here. One of the things that helped me in the beginning, however, was to have at least three tanks, each filled with a different flavor. Some people find their perfect flavor (ADV: all-day-vape), while others spend a small fortune searching for something they never find. Also, many new vapers go to tobacco because they are looking for something like their cigarette, but sometimes vaping flavors that are decidedly un-cigarette-like can help you get off of them sooner due to the contrast in flavor. Just something to think about.

Also, if you want to use glass, you can get Evod Glass tanks--they are just like your tanks, but have glass instead of plastic. I think they usually sell for about $7 or so. I purchased seven (one of each color) when I starrted vaping to cover a variety of flavors--and still use them, on occasion, more than a year later.

Best of luck!

Oh, I'm sorry, I was rambling on up there and thought my post was already too lengthy, and totally forgot the important part! I got the 50/50 blend with 18% nicotine, because I was looking at a comparison chart and that said "medium," and I've mostly always smoked mild tobacco. I read somewhere also (maybe here? my mind is a jumble) that most heavy smokers usually have to start with really high nicotine to compensate for the absorption rate with the vapor. I'm confused.

I got a couple of tobacco flavors (USA and something else, it's upstairs in a cupboard now), some raspberry, wintergreen, spearmint, and they tossed in a little freebie bottle of something-ice, which I assume is another mint/menthol flavor. I filled the tanks on the two e-cigs, one with the USA tobacco flavor, and the other with wintergreen, and they both taste the same. Like crap, basically (ask me how I know what THAT tastes like!), and it's really hard to tell them apart. Another thing is there's a kind of little popping/crackling sound when I hit the battery button on both of them to try an inhale, and I don't know if that's normal. If not, maybe the problem lies there. The little disposable I tried tasted fine, I could inhale it just like a regular cigarette, and it didn't pop or crackle. But when I tried that I didn't know the proper way to inhale vapor (I was doing short quick puffs), so I probably got NO nicotine out of it whatsoever, which is probably why I kept reaching for my pack. I didn't smoke any regular cigarettes, though, until the disposable ran out around noon the next day. Which tells me that although I go THROUGH two packs a day, I don't think I actually SMOKE anywhere near that amount. I'm always doing something, setting one down and coming back to find it all burned up, so I light another one. If the disposable is only equal to 4 to 6 regular cigarettes (is that right?) then I guess I'm not really a heavy smoker, just a heavy burner-upper.

Anyway, I figured getting a decent setup would help, plus me doing a little more reading and finding out how to use them properly, but UGH! I already tried just holding the vapor in my mouth, but it sends my husband off into fits of giggles because he says I look like a chipmunk with my cheeks full of nuts! But hey, whatever. He married me because I'm silly, so this should be nothing new to him. Or maybe I should just ban him to his shop, and tell him to leave me alone to experiment by myself for a bit, huh? ;)

So, am I understanding that this "owie" is the throat hit? If so, I want no more PG! Right? Just VG? The stuff I have is already so thick, it's hard to work with, and the blunt needle dropper tip won't fit on the bottles so I had to get a syringe out of the cows' med kit and use that. I'm not sure how straight VG would work... I couldn't draw it out of the bottle with the needle, so I took the needle off, covered the needle end with my finger, and squeezed from the bottle into the top of the syringe to 1.5 ml on the first one (the tank capacity is 1.6), and just 1 ml on the other one. Then I put the plunger partway in, turned it upright, pushed the plunger to get all the air out, put the needle back on and "injected it" into the tank, between the tank sides and the center hole thing. I probably got some in the center hole, although I was trying to be careful not to. It's so thick, and it's hard to see in there while I'm filling it that way. Could that cause the popping sound? Or did I get duds? Or it's an ID10T error? :(

I appreciate your help, you guys. I really want this to work.

If you're using 50/50 PG/VG, then the problem is probably the high nicotine level -- and 18mg is fairly high. I smoked for 39 years, from 1 to 3 pks a day, so the store sent me home with 18mg. Made me sick as a goat. You might need to try 12mg, if you can't get past the throat burn; *most* of throat hit is from the nicotine, though high PG (like 70% or more) intensifies it; 50/50 gives you plenty of VG, so the problem is more likely the nicotine. If you can even ease in to vaping with 12mg, then find you need a higher nic level, maybe it wouldn't feel so bad after you've gotten accustomed for a while. (I ended up having to go down to 6mg, because I was chainvaping like a maniac at first, but once I got over that, I've been at 10mg very happily for over 10 months).

I also found the smell hard to take, at first -- it kinda made me sick. But that passes pretty quickly. Also if you're feeling at all nauseous from too much nicotine, then the smell is just ghastly.

Welcome to ECF. The vape was rough when my wife and I started vaping a18mg 70pg/30vg tobacco type juice. It got better as we vaped more and smoked less. Lucky for us neither one of us seems to have any intolerance to PG.

For the wife and I, finding a more tolerable now enjoyable juice was trial and error. We had to sit down and try juices to find things we liked. I've ordered on line from several of the reputable vendors and haven't liked anything I've gotten. Such is the way for different tastes.

I think I've found something. I realized the little freebie bottle of Extreme Ice was 0% nicotine and max VG, so since my tank was half empty, I topped it off with that, AND IT'S PERFECT! Whether it's the increase in VG ratio or the decrease in nicotine, it's smooth and doesn't "bite" me, it doesn't stink so horribly, and I can actually feel a bit of cool in my mouth, like there's really some menthol in there. Obviously, the little sample bottle has aged enough to be good, and the other ones are still too fresh. So I'll just cut whatever I put in my tank with the Extreme Ice until that runs out, and in the meantime, look for some other flavors.

My vaping acquaintance on the other forum had suggested an Aspire glass tank, so I was going to order a few of those. Getting them in different colors is a great idea, so I can remember which one is which flavor. Now I have to see if the Aspire comes in different colors... if not I'll check out the other one mentioned.

So far this morning, I'm happily puffing on this e-cig and having no problems at all. Thanks SO much for all the help with this! It's so nice to get encouragement instead of condemnation (from the anti-smoking-ANYTHING crowd).

This combination I made this morning is REALLY NICE! I just found out I'm a Tootle Puffer, but although it's a silly name, I'll wear it proudly. :D I hope I can always remain a Tootle Puffer. If I do, this will be WAY cheaper than the cigarette habit was.

I'm really loving the raspberry with menthol... and the 9 mg nicotine seems to be fine for me. I haven't even used half the tank yet, and I've been working on it all day, since about 5:30 this morning, when I added the Extreme Ice to the raspberry already in the tank. I didn't fill it all the way up, though, because I think that's what was causing the popping noises - I probably slopped a little into the center tube. Not sure, but neither one seems to make that noise anymore. Maybe it was just that the wicks weren't fully saturated yesterday and had to sit overnight? If that's the case, I'll need to plan carefully for those change-outs.

Eventually, I want to learn how to wrap my own coils and make my own wicks, but first I have to wait for one of these to get gunky enough to change out so we can take it apart and see how it works.
