Down here in NM we have Beggars night on halloween eve;kids go out like on Halloween.Personally I think the 'lil beggars are just out for xtra goodies LOL...We also have arroyos, ditches and sometimes you'll hear a mournful cry in the dead of night....They say it's La Lyrona;a woman who drowned her kids to get with a man. When he found out what she had done he strangled her.So now her spirit crys at the arroyos for her children but if she finds a child around the arroyo she will take them instead!OOOOOhhhhhhooooooo ;Keeps misbehavin' kids in line LOL.

That is awesome.
There was a tradition that was started by the Alamo Drafthouse theater here in Austin, I'm not sure if they did it this year though.
It's called a zombie walk. Everyone dresses up as zombies and walks about 2 miles down Congress avenue towards the state capital and "attack" pedestrians and the metro busses lol.
I went once two years ago, I actually have a photo up on my photo albums here I believe.

That sounds like tons of fun! And true to the real meaning of the holiday; honoring the dead.

All my kids are half breeds lol ! 2 from a Sioux tribe in South Dakota and the other 5 are the Pueblo Tribes here in New Mexico;anywho the Pueblo tribes celebrate All Souls Day on Nov.1st by cooking a feast and setting a table out with all the food ;place settings etc. then everyone stays up all night fasting ,praying and other rituals. When the sun comes up in the morning of the 1st everyone walks to the river carrying plates of food t.hat were served for the spirits and puts the dishes in the river to carry it away along with prayers. Then everyone returns home and the feast is enjoyed. As I am White I am not allowed to participate in this and some other rituals but I raised my kids to know and honor their Native American heritage.Oops gettin off track here, sorry. The Mexican people also have a "Dia Los Muertes" day of the dead, but I don't know anything about that.

I'd think they'd walk by the bat bridge---at the time they are flying out!!!

Our town used to have the Scarecrow Festival. It was a day long event that included hay rides and other Halloween carnival type games, but the crowning glory of the day was getting to make your own scarecrow. Using two pieces of wood in a cross shape, twine, old clothes that you bring with you, some burlap, and LOTS of hay; 50-60 people would sit outside and make scarecrows. Then after the festival all the businesses and houses around town would put the scarecrows up as decoration.

Unfortunately, they stopped putting on the festival - either it was the bad economy or a lack of volunteer organizers  We still have our scarecrows though!

When we did it, it happened at like 2 in the afternoon, lol.
I suppose they just wanted as many people to see it as possible. I remember it made the news, lol.
I don't think the video is up anymore though.

I grew up around people who didn't believe in celebrating Halloween. I was in the deep rural South. They thought church should be enough to scare you.
When my mom moved at least an hour away from my grandparents, I got to dress up and get candy. The 70's were an innocent time of eating the neighbors home baked goods: candy apples, caramel popcorn balls and loads of chocolate goodness for later.

Yesterday, I saw kids outside, during the day, playing in their costumes. A little kid in a voice distorting Darth Vader mask on a tricycle was being chased by an older kid on a skatebaord with a huge fake sword.

I am in Williamsburg, and they have Hallo-Scream at Busch Gardens (of course) but we also have a few plantations around that do haunted ghosts tours. There is also colonial Williamsburg that does the haunted ghost tours all year round. The outlet malls in the area participate in Trick or Treat Off the Streets, and all of the stores hand out candy, and usually a few stores give moms a treat, too! They have a costume contest.. always good times! Lots to do around here for Halloween!

Homeish now
There are Tons of abondoned farm houses around where I grew up...as a kid we would always pick one to break into and go ghost hunting.
Never caught anything..but we had fun trying to spook each other.

One of my mothers friends owns a pumpkin farm, going to miss it this year...but the weekend after Halloween she always has a huge party.
Pig pickins(with only vinegar sauce of course) and tons of southern country food potluck...pumkin carving, and flinging contests, bond fires and marshmallows. Good stuff.

There's an old abandoned church around the outskirts of town that is blocked off and has been for many years. We used to go to that church on Halloween and scare the life out of eachother. One year there were about 50 teenagers on that property at one time. Very Very scary place...i remember running past the graveyard praying nothing would grab my legs as i ran....LOL...the good ole days.

I also remember running and jumping in the bed at night because i was afraid something would grab my ankles..and the closet door had to be closed, always !

I think i watched too many scary movies when i was a kid...

UR~ did you ever do the haunted hay rides at Bendix Woods when you lived in South Bend?

yall live(d) in South Bend?? I went to High School in Granger. Small world :p

Down here in the South.. we have a mixture. Half the crowd goes to the Church Fall Festivals and "trunk or treats" and the other half (being that we live on the beach) believes any weekend is an excuse for a party.. so Halloween is included! The adults dress up too.. pull wagons with beer coolers :) and around every corner is a block party. Hot dog stands, potlucks, jello shooters for the adults :) etc.. it's a neighborhood event!.. and every neighborhood does something~
