Did you read eHumans excellent guide? Don't think I can add much to what he wrote. It's all about trial and error and getting the feel for it. Not too tight, not too loose. Thicker wire is easier than thinner wire. For me.

Main issue with hotspots at first, for me, was that tightening the center nut made the wire bite into the wick. I wrap it the other way around now. Pull it quite tight before tightening. Some trial and error to get the initial tightness right so that it gets perfect when tightening the nut.

I'm still a noob to genies but a problem I had a lot was not wrapping it evenly. It would leave tiny gaps that would show up during a dry burn. That and top leg hot spots. Ive seem to have gotten a lot better now.

Yep.. those tiny gaps equal the burnt/metallic taste. Even though I use 28g to get my resistance down for my mechs, it's much MUCH easier to wrap a good coil with 30g :glare:

That's some good stuff. I keep thinking 'I know my top coils look good'. I bet I'm getting the lower coils too tight and shorting out. I didn't realize that could happen.
The q-tip idea is great too. I've been straining my brain wondering what I could use since my drill bits aren't handy. (moved recently and tools are packed up since I don't have a garage)

Im a little lazy to copy paste but i explained it in my blog post.
