By the time I finished buying every new mod and tank out there (I settled on Provaris and nautilus Aspires as my go-to hardware), the City of Evanston passed its anti-vaping ordinance. Chicago has since followed suit.

My wife and I saw the handwriting on the wall: Northeast Illinois was not going to be our home for much longer.

Because my wife and I boycott jurisdictions which pass such ordinances, some of my savings have gone to pay for more gasoline to buy products and services outside of Evanston and Chicago.

I also stocked up on enough hardware and concentrated nicquid (in the freezer!) to last me until I'm 95.

The rest has gone to our moving fund. Evanston also has a 2.5% departure tax, which will cost us about $8,500. We'll have to cover that somehow.

If you buy another house within Evanston within a certain period of time, the tax is waived.

But if you sell your home in Evanston and then not buy another house in Evanston, you get nailed for the departure tax.

Many jurisdictions have such a tax. But most jurisdictions don't have such an astronomically high rate.

Wow. That's positively medieval, like when serfs couldn't leave the land to go to the city.

I know, right? It's just like when a peasant needed his Lord's permission to leave and go live in the city, or else the shire reeve (sheriff) would detain him and put him in the stocks, before escorting him under guard back to his Lord's demesne. Really glad I don't live in such a benighted place. Sheesh!

Yup, Andria and drugarth.

It's a fairly common tax in Northeast Illinois, at least. Usually the community slaps it on the proceeds when you sell your house. If you buy within the same jurisdiction within a certain period of time, the jurisdiction gives you your tax money back. Usually after months and months and a lot of cage-rattling on your part.

Needless to say, such taxes aren't advertised. And there's no constituency to vote against a departure tax: those who have been gouged by it have departed the jurisdiction.

Municipalities have a lot of sneaky ways to extract money from the benighted populace. A favorite one around here is the water tax. In Evanston, for every dollar you spend on municipal water, you now pay an additional $1.15 in taxes. In fairness to the alderoids, the howling mobs won't let them raise the price of the water itself. It's been stuck at the same rate since the 1970's.

Seems like someone would challenge the constitutionality of it. It's definitely not conducive to "freedom".

I made my own cigarettes at around $35 to $45 a month and since 2008, I've spent more on vaping than I would-have spent if i had continued smoking. Plus I smoked for a few long periods throughout the past 8 years, which means I would-have lost even more if I hadn't. lol. kind-of a bummer, sorry...

I used to do the RYO thing too! So even without the shinyitis it would be more! But for me it's "WHO CARES" cuz I feel so much better & it's DEFINATELY cheaper than my other hobby collecting watches!
