Hello everyone -- I'm a new vaper -- a little over 2 weeks ago -- and a 40-year pack and a half a day smoker. I haven't had an analog cigarette since I started this and finally don't really want one. I do feel proud but several of my family members and friends (smokers and non-smokers) have said "well you really haven't quit smoking" you're still using nicotine, etc. Even my husband who stopped smoking cold turkey 14 years ago says I'll never "quit smoking" as long as I'm using my vape! So far, I've just kinda/sorta agreed with them, but I do feel like I've quit smoking! I'm just wondering if y'all have encountered this attitude and what do you say? Thanks for any input.

Well obviously U are getting no support from the family and friends...U should be proud, U have quit smoking TOBACCO, the product that has thousands of harmful chemicals..and U produce NO SMOKE, so U have quit smoking if they want to get technical....Vapor is NOT snoke therefore U R NOT smoking....be proud that U and even most all docs would congratulate U for NOT SMOKING anymore since U began using a personal vaporizer and are vaping...I can't repeat what I would tell what I would tell anybody who knocked me for vaping after giving up SMOKING and didn't support me instead...

There's lots of threads about this, and certainly your response to folks will vary based on the day, your mood, their mood, the weather, what you had for lunch, etc. We all have to pick and choose our battles, but it shouldn't really matter what they think. It's your choice to vape instead of smoke. This has worked for you thus far, so vape on, vape proud!

I usually explain that I like too many veggies etc to give up nicotine, lay out the comparison of nicotine and caffeine and what they both do in our bodies and let it be. It usually puts it in perspective for them.

Most people tend to button it up when you glare at their energy drink and start talking about what caffeine can do...

I just want to control your life, I don't want you controlling mine ;)

We support you. We see that you have quit putting tar and all the other addictive chemicals in cigs into your body. This is less exspencive and healthier for you. You can slowly lower the nicotine level you are taking in. Either down to 0% or a very low %. I plan to get to where I'm either using 0% or 6% nicotine. I want to go low enough that I don't physically need to vape. I will just vape because I want to. I have no intention of quitting. I enjoy vaping and plan on reaching the point where I vape because I want to. Not because I need the nicotine. What we do mimics smoking so well that those who aren't in the know don't realize the difference. I am sorry that those closest to you don't realize the difference. I'm sure it hurts. But we here on this forum do know. We are proud of you. We support you and we celabrate with you. Don't give up. You're doing great.

I think there comments come from being uneducated about the topic of vaping. I think if you were to explain to them that you can slowly get off the nicotine, they may have a different view. Some of my family members say that I haven't quite quit smoking because I do still get the nicotine, however, they are still thrilled because I am not getting all the additional harmful chemicals analogs have. Some people cannot just quit cold turkey, me being one of them. I am a fully time college student so my break away from all the madness schoolwork can bring on was to smoke and now it is to vape. I couldn't imagine myself quitting while in school, but my husband pushed it and so I gave it a try and we have been analog free now for over 2 months. I wouldn't change it for the world. I would not let those comments get to you because you are doing this for you and your health, not for them.

Just the other day I had a good friend act the SAME way. I am PROUD that I have quit smoking but she made a "yucky face" and covered her mouth/nose when I took a drag off my pv. She said "If it has nicotine in it, then you haven't quit anything".

I also plan on getting down to 0% nic from my current 18%, with no plans of quitting vaping.

I'd say, "Sure I have! I've quit formaldehyde, cyanide, carbon monoxide, tar, hexane, dioxin, ammonia and about 4,000 other cancer causing chemicals. Dont you think that's a good thing?"

Congrats to you, I'm in the same place as you. Damn near 40 years smoking Marlboros and not a one since June 8, I'm proud of myself and proud of you as well. I tell people I'm finally tobacco free and feelig better every day after trying every method known to man to quit cigs, all unsuccesfully!

The first thing I say when someone says to me that I haven't quit smoking because I am still getting nicotine is, would you say that to someone who was using gum or the patch? Every time they look at me with a sheepish look and say no. Then I say that the reason this has worked, when nothing else did, is because I do inhale vapor. I have found that the act of smoking is more important to me than the nicotine ( I have went from 24mg down to 3 mg, except when I have a beer, then I use one of my 6mg). If I get asked when I am going to quit vaping, I just shrug my shoulders and say that my goal was to quit smoking, and I have done that. If I continue vaping for the rest of my life I am happy with that. To be honest, I never expected to be able to quit smoking, I loved it. When I was smoking if people asked me if I was going to quit I'd reply when I die. This is the only way I could quit, and now I enjoy it so much more then smoking.

I know how you feel. I tried to quit smoking exactly 19 times, very serious each time. I remember I was using the gum once, and a dear relative in health care said, "Our doctors all laugh, and say you're just mainlining now!" I didn't know anything back then, felt bad, you know I don't mainline anything, so went back to smoking. As it turns out, I do care what people who are close to me think and feel. The others, meh, not so much.

I have since quit smoking and vape. I didn't know a lot just a short while ago, but I think I have a good understanding now. Between this forum, the wife who quit with me by vaping, and at least 100 videos, I know a lot more. I didn't know that I would learn about the scientific studies, the composition of vapor, the good medical effects of nicotine on the body, the immediate health benefits of quitting smoking, and the science and chemistry behind vaping. I know that stuff now, and the others don't. They are ignorant, entitled to their opinions, and I have many friends here, and at home, who do support me. I have gotten a dozen folks into vaping, six of whom have quit smoking completely. I try to help the noob's with their questions, and myself with my own. I feel pretty good about it now, and I don't think those closest to me, who's opinions I do value, have learned a thing. But I know the truth, and that gives me comfort and strength.

You'll find that here Penny, and you can feel good about yourself, and about quitting all you want, and we surely appreciate what you've accomplished. Welcome to ECF, congrats on quitting, good luck, great post, vape on!

Well, I'll say it for them - "Way to go, girl!!!". You found something that works for you, it is a big improvement on smoking cigarettes, you feel better and you should be proud of yourself. So you are still getting some nicotine - big whoop. Last time I tried, you can't lower the nicotine on a Marlboro too much - ya just smoke more of 'em (at least I did) and if you so choose later on you CAN lower the nic in your vape.

There are so many people on this forum who are incredibly supportive as well as very knowledgable, you have come to the right place.

Congrats!! Now, go check out vaporgirl.com and fast tech - (there are a couple others who slip my mind at the moment) for some serious bling-y battery stuff. :)

I'd start off by saying that its rude to down play the accomplishments of others.

Then I would read him this list of chemicals not found in Ejuice other then nicotine,
Harmful and Potentially Harmful Constituents in Tobacco Products and Tobacco Smoke: Established List. This is a list of things you are no longer smoking and exposing your family to.

I would then mention that it is also much cheaper but since he wants to call it smoking then you want your average anual smoking budget in cash now.

I would remind him that vaping isn't smoking and many people use it as a calorie free way to get the flavor fix and satisfy their oral fixation instead of eating.

and for you if you truely want to quit the nic then wein yourself off it slowly. I did this the first time by buying both nic and unniced juice in the same flavor and as I used the nic bottle I filled back up with the unniced bottle, you can hardly tell as you go and after awhile I just stopped altogether. but like most addicts I relapsed after about a year and here I am.

I admire people who actually put effort into switching from cigarettes to vaping because for me I bought a personal vaporizer because the way it was presented to me it seemed cool, safer and potentially cheaper (note the use of 'potentially') lol.

Perhaps that's why I have a more carefree attitude on it, which allows me to respond like this:

Them - ...But technically you're still a smoker
Me - Yeah, I guess I am I don't feel like I've given up anything. Doing it this way though it's theoretically safer, smells better, [insert reasoning that is important to me or maybe them]

I hate the taste of cigarettes now, so going back for me is very slim, in the future I may even quit vaping. (I had a couple of inquisitive moments since I've been a full-time vaper and tried a puff on an analogue a couple of times, disgusting and felt 'unrewarding').

So a few loose thoughts out there, but my points are this:

1). You've made it this far without much support from your friends/family, that's a massive achievement - well done!
2). All the facts this far point towards a longer life because of the change you've made - that should be a good argument for the hubby ;)
3). You're still a nicotine addict, but not a smoker anymore (people tend to lump these together), people don't get denied jobs because they need a coffee to get them started in the morning, it's crazy how things work sometimes, there's a lot less wrong with being a vaping-nicotine addict than a smoking-nicotine addict because of (4).
4). You smell better, and can smell better, you're essentially now an undetectable smoker, your taste will improve, your house will smell better.

Don't be discouraged and well done!
