What else will I need?

Hi there! I'm brand new to vaping--actually, I haven't even started yet--and I'm unbelievably excited. I've tried every other method of quitting: cold turkey (worked when I was pregnant with my kids, but I started again after they were born), patches, gum, and Chantix (which made me a raving, crazy b*tch).

I ordered my Joye 510 starter kit (along with a few extra bottles of juice) on Thursday, and I'm hoping it will get here early next week. I also went ahead and picked up a few more bottles of juice from Ms. T's because of the awesome reviews on here.

My kit comes with two atomizers, two batteries, a plug-in charger, and four pre-filled carts (of some Marboro 24mg juice). I got a variety of flavors--mainly sweet types--because I'm not sure how well I'll like the tobacco flavors, even though I've been smoking for about 13 years. (I'll turn 30 this year.)

My question is...in addition to what I have coming to me, what else do I need? I'm a stay-at-home mom right now, and don't spend much time in the car, so I'm trying to figure out what other types of chargers would be best for my lifestyle. Also, do I need to go ahead and pick up any more carts, atomizers, or batteries now, or should I wait until after I get my 510 and see then?

Like I said, I'm so excited about vaping...I feel like this time I WILL be able to quit analogs. A lot of my addiction to smoking is the hand-to-mouth part of it (orally fixated?) and the fact that I'll still be able to "smoke" (vape) while not inhaling all the extra chemicals, not smelling like cigarettes, not exposing my kids to secondhand smoke just seems too good to be true. I told my best friend about e-cigs last night and showed him videos and such, and he's planning to order his asap. He even told his father about it, and he's planning to do it too! I hope that after my parents see and get to try my PV, they'll also jump on the wagon, because they're hardcore smokers and have been for 40 years or so. :D

Good luck! Quitting tobacco is among the most difficult addictions to conquer.

Pick up a USB passthrough for your 510. This device plugs into a USB port and powers the atomizer. This will help to extend the life of your batteries since you won't need to use them as often.

When your first atomizer quits, order a few more to have on-hand for future failures. The same with batteries. Have backups!

Hi vividdreamer!

Welcome! It sounds as if you have things really well though out! Good for you, and congrats on your decision!

I started with the 510 and it turned out to be a good choice for me. I was able to quit smoking the day I got it. Go easy on yourself, and don't set your expectations too high - I had no expectations and didn't plan on quitting, it just happened. I too failed at every other quit-smoking method including Chantix, but I was able to quit cold turkey when I was pregnant. (Weird, right?)

You should be fine on cartridges because they are refillable. Do some reading about "cart mods" and get yourself some polyfil (from the craft store or Wal-Mart) or some Fluval water polishing pads (from PetSmart or other pet supply store).

The filler material that your cartridges will come stuffed with won't last too long and you'll want to be ready to learn to re-stuff them yourself.

Once you get started and get the hang of vaping, maybe order a couple of extra atomizers. The atomizers are the unknown in the 510 vaping equation and it's always good to have spares.

Once I had my 510 kit and I knew how much I liked it I just went ahead and ordered another starter kit, and started collecting atomizers.

You'll do great! It sounds like you're well prepared and have done a lot of homework. Keep reading and posting. Everyone here is awesome and so helpful.

Good Luck!! :)

Thank you, VelvetFrog and Remie!

I figured I'd need a PT, so I'm going to pick one of those up with my next order (along with some extra attys and batteries, and probably a case of some kind...maybe the box that charges the batteries and holds the extra attys...I can't think of the term atm). Thanks for telling me that...I do spend quite a bit of time online, so the idea of being able to sit with the computer and vape away without worrying about the battery dying sounds great.

And Remie, I went ahead and got a pack of the blue foam (I think there are 10 of them in there, they only cost $.75) along with my kit. I'm not sure how long those will last me, but I'm pretty sure they're reusable, right?

I've already decided that after I get and use my 510 for awhile, I want to get a Chuck (provided I love vaping as much as I anticipate I will) because of how cool they look and the fact that the batteries last a lot longer. I know that's a whole different can of worms, though...I feel pretty knowledgeable about the 510 already because of all the research I've been doing, but I have no idea how they work. Oh well, I have plenty of time to research them before I'll be buying one!

Thanks again--this is such a wonderful, incredibly informative place! Thank goodness for it, or else I don't think I'd ever have bought an e-cig in the first place. ;)

Wow, already sounds like you've done a lot of your own research.

That's how I quit. I started with a 510 kit and then started buying more stuff as I went along. Each day of vaping, I found myself smoking less and less. And then one day I just made the jump into no smoking at all. It took about 3 weeks for me.

And I hadn't even planned on quitting. I just thought ecigs would help me to 'cut back'. :)

You'll enjoy Ms T's juice. Very tasty! I'm vaping marshmallow right now. :D

I use the shredded Pyramid Tea Bag mod in my 510. It's the only filler that I found that didn't leave me with a burnt taste, and I can just buy more at the grocery store when I need more.

If you have any problems, research and experiment. There are a lot of solutions for common problems found on ECF.

And you can always put up a thread asking for help. Many of the people here have been very helpful providing me with info when I was stumped.

It took me a while, and a lot of experimentation, to find the right cart filling, nicotine strength and juice that worked for me.

And I found all I needed here on ECF. Good luck!

I think you have it covered as you said you're getting an extra atty or 2 and a PT - I find mine invaluable :thumb:
Also extra juice, the mistake I made was not getting enough different juice from differnt places (and different nic strengths too) so it sounds like you're good to go.
Agree w/Remie though - do not have expectations on the quitting side - take it slowly and see how things progress. I gave up cigs totally after about 10 days cos I jsut didn't want any any longer (but my intention had been to cut back, not quit)

Well, for what it's worth; I'd get that 510 in and make sure I knew 'this thing will help me quit!'.

THEN, knowing what I know, get at least a hundred dollar bill and get a couple more kits, more juice (I use 20ml a week)--you have enough tips to last you a long time with those two other kits.

Don't forget to line your cartridge up with your atomizer ( here's the inside of your atomizer when you look down inside of it ( : ) and here is what the bottom of your cartridge probably looks like ( 0 ) put that colon inside of the zero.

That colon is actually two white insulators--one at the top, one at the bottom.

Anyway--Welcome Aboard!

I've read really positive things about the "blue foam". There must have been a run on it at my local pet supply stores the day I was out looking for it because no one had it in stock!

I'm going to check around for it again, just to compare it to the white Fluval, which so far has been working better than anything else I've tried.

It sounds like you have all the bases covered! The extra juice, from different suppliers is a good idea. A lot of them carry 5ml sample sizes and it's a good way to experiment with different flavors, and suppliers without spending tons of money.

When you find something you like, it's easy to order larger bottles.

Don't discount e-liquids that you don't like right away. Your taste buds will change as you decrease the cigarettes, or quit. You'll notice that once you get the hang of vaping (which doesn't take long), e-liquids will taste different to you for the first couple of weeks... or longer.

I'm just over a month and I still find myself going back and re-trying e-liquids I really didn't like... to discover that they aren't that bad after all... or - nah I still don't like them :)

I made the mistake of not ordering enough e-juice with my initial 510 kit and almost ran out. I stalked the mailman for a few days like a crazy-lady

I don't think I would have taken the plunge without this forum either! It was the best place to land when I started researching e-cigs :)

You can get yourself a wall adapter to USB to plug your passthrough in when you aren't at your computer and want to sit in your easy chair and watch TV, ect. BTW, the passthrough without the in-line battery is 5v where the 510 is 3.7 so it burns hotter and some have said brings out the flavor better in some juices.

Look into the burnoff method to clean attys where you hold down the button for 8-10 seconds a few times with cooling in between on Youtube. The big guy with the fatdora hat and the dood with the fumanchu beard demonstrate this.

YouTube - how to clean a 510 atomizer

Vividdreamer, welcome! You have certainly done your homework and chosen well. Only the actual vaping in your own environment now will tell you if there is anything else.

Jango, you are close, but not quite correct. If the PT has a batt box, it is vaping off the battery, not the USB, which just charges the batt. That batt, however, is about 350 mAh at 3.7-4.2V, which will give a higher wattage than the regular batts. On regular batts the atty is only at about 3.1V. It is a bit higher with the 10440 batt. This is why there is better vaping often with a 510 PT compared to the reg batts.

If the PT is straight-wire, no batt box inline, then yes, it is a 5V device. You are right, though, the PT is a nice little device, for sure.

Yeah, I was thinking of the non batt passthrough that I orderd from Electronicstix. His has a heavy wire that looks like it's more durable. I didn't think to make the destinction between the two types.

:)

Glad you mentioned the vendor by name, as I knew someone made one, and I was considering getting one, and couldn't remember who sold it. I would have to use an external AC/USB converter for the power though...it would likely overload my computer ports.

Just looked at it. Yep, that is some beefy wire! The one I was thinking of didn't have nearly the wire thickness. They are on sale now, so this is a nice deal. And it would blow away the 10440 batt PTs. Probably less to go wrong in it too. Thanks! :)
