A mod, or an APV (advanced personal vaporizer), is a regulated or unregulated step-up battery from an Ego style battery.

Typically, a regulated mod has a replaceable battery that needs to be taken out and plugged into a charger to recharge before being reinserted. It also contains a few electronics and wires to prevent damage to the battery or to the user. All mods are typically much larger to accommodate such a battery, but of course have plenty of customization to swap out for a shorter battery. Mods come in tube shapes, like a long fat cigar, and also box-mods, which are basically about the size of a small pack of cigarettes almost. The more you look into it, the more interestingly shaped mods you will find.

Some mods will have features such as VV (Variable Voltage) which will allow you to turn up or down the voltage in order to supply wattage to your tank more evenly. This is quickly becoming the standard in all mods lately, as tanks are becoming more and more diverse.

A step beyond a regulated mod is an unregulated, or better known as a "mechanical mod". These are basically hollow metal tubes made out of stainless steel or brass that have no wires or built in safety features to protect the battery. These are for experienced vapers only, as you need to know exactly what you're doing to operate one correctly.

To answer your last question, a T3S clearomizer has Ego threading, this is why it fits on your Ego battery. Most mods you see today will have Ego AND 510 threading. This means it can fit a clearomizer like the T3S on top, or even a 510 tank such as the Kanger Protank 2 for example. Before you order a mod, be sure to check what threading it has.

Hope that answered most of your questions!

humpstyles nailed it.
Perfect explanation.
Now for beginner mods, I will name a few.
Mind you, you can get these from fasttech.com which is a chinese distributor but their company can be hit or miss sometimes.
Innokin iTaste vv version 3.
-This mod is great for beginners, VV = variable volts, so you can modify it to your liking.

Vamo V2 / innokin SVD
-Another good mod, you need to buy batteries that you put inside the mod itself to work. It is easy but just make sure you get good batteries. Ask around here.

Innokin MVP
-Great mod that has an internal battery to charge. Really is a better version of the innokin iTaste VV v3.

...........

With these mods you also need a tank to hold ejuice.
Dont get an RBA because those are advanced.
Good tanks are iClear 30's , Protanks, etc.

.................

See if you have any vape shops near you and head up to one of those.
Can be a great learning experience and most will let you sample ejuice for free.

Feel free to PM me or post for any further help!

Is that a pen?

a kit?

a mini?

I don't want to call my device a "mod" if it's not a mod, know what I mean?

That is an Ego style. Actually the exact same kit I started with couple months ago.

A kit is just a word to show it comes with more then just a single device. For example it could come with a tank, charger, and battery. Or it could come with a mod, a tank, etc.

The word "mod" is just a slang expression, and can mean about anything you want it to. We tend to use a lot of slang terms.
Many use the word to discribe anything larger than an eGo, others to mean a mechanical PV, and others to discribe any PV with a replacible battery.

A "mod" is also a person that checks to make sure that that you are not a "BOT" "spamming" here.

It occurs to me that rather than generalizing any PV by calling it a mod might be better explained, especially to those inquiring about a device, just call it by it's brand name, ie: iTaste, Vamo, whatever.

Of course you'd be asked to clarify that at which point I've said that it's an e cig on steroids.

I really don't know if there's any perfect way to describe what we're holding to everyone.

As far as sizing nomenclature goes, this would be classified as a 'mid-size'.

A 'mini' would be something that looks about the size of an actual cigarette. Also called 'cigalike' for obvious reasoning.
