What exactly is PG/VG?

I'm sure this question has been asked before but I was unable to find an answer in the sticky threads or other threads, so i figured I'd start a new one. So I've seen some talk about PG/VG percentages on this site in relation to e-liquid, and the handy-dandy hover feature on this site tells me that PG/VG stands for propylene glycol and vegetable glycerine. My question is, how exactly do these percentages affect the e-liquid and how it performs? Are there advantages/disadvantages to different levels?

PG for a bit more flavour and throat hit, it's consistency is pretty close to water.
VG for a bit less flavour less throat hit and more vapour production that is also more dense, it's consistency is pretty close to something like maple syrup.

I personally vape 80% or higher VG, because I'm not a huge fan of big throat hit and I like nice thick dense vapour.

PG accents the throat/lung hit of nicotine and will carry flavors easier. Mixing your own liquid, you won't have to use as much or alter flavoring with higher PG ratios. It is very thin.

VG is milkier and smoother in vapor production. If you have a really flavorful 100%VG liquid, you probably will only be able to drip with it. It is a lot thicker than PG, so you may experience wicking issues with higher VG ratios.

There is also PEG, not really popular in US..yet, but it is polyethylene glycol. It offers a middle ground between PG and VG, and people that react to PG badly tend to not react negatively with PEG.

Flavoring usually about 3- 15%- could be higher or lower depending on the flavor used.
PG enhances flavor, TH and lung hit- water like - many of us believe PG to be a throat irritant.
VG= vapor and can mute flavor- thick
Nicotine- TH, lung hit and our need for nicotine. The MOST important ingredient in regards to TH and lung hit.
Standards in the industry are 80/ 20 or 70/ 30 PG/ VG. Many are moving towards a 50/ 50 ratio as they find it smoother.

PG is more harsh. It gives great throat hit but doesn't give much in the way of vaper. Too much PG can be irritating to the mouth, throat and tongue IMHO. Everyone has their preference but I think 50/50 is pretty popular. VG makes clouds of vaper but has a sweet taste itself and tends to mute the flavorings. VG IMHO is way less harsh.
