Meant to insert Self updateable
You will buy a simple mod Say VV/VW 10 watts 6 volts.
You want 20 watts the upgrade software will cost X$
Temp= X$
100, 200 watts = X$
You will end up ordering the Items you want at a cost for each. Just like computer programs. You will have to have a key to make them work and you will pay for that.
Just my 2cents

Yeah I'm waiting for mods running Android or another small platform os. It'll happen, just like digital cameras. I don't think they will be able to add hardware ability as easily, because the hardware keeps changing, but it would be nice. There are already bluetooth capable mods, and upgradable firmware so who knows. But the device will have to include the hardware required for the software to run, which is an added expense. It used to be cheaper to manufacture one chip and alter them to he different levels, but as the cost of manufacturing has come down and skilled labor has gone up, it's less cost effective to use higher cost internals in budget software.

Wouldn't get itself off the ground. Even though chip technology is changing, a 200 watt programmable chipset isn't put into a simple 20 watt device. Too much cost and size and support component differences. Serious updates would also require changing batteries/capacities/current capabilities. Some folks want an ego battery, some want to make clouds. And I ain't gonna pay fifty bucks for an ego battery just because some fool says it's infinitely upgradeable.

Pending and future legislation on all goobermental levels MAY also play a role in what we are able to develop.

You might get alternate or customizable menu interfaces.

If somebody did make a device where they put in the hardware for 200 watts but sold it with a 20 watt limit and you had to pay for "upgrade" (really just a key) to use the 200 watts, I would boycott that company

Nope never gonna happen for all the reasons above and the main fact that a lot of money would have to be gambled to try it out I don't see any company willing to take the chance. Also there are some users who use their hardware as a public statement of their spending power the idea of them buying into this is slight at best.
