Two possible causes come to mind:

Be certain before adding e-liquid to your clearomizer that the coil head is snuggly screwed into the base/ I've seen new clearomizers with the coil head just loose inside the tank, allowing liquid to leak because there is no seal/

Clearomizers have relatively small coils/ Drawing too hard can allow more e-liquid to be drawn to the coil than can be vaporized into vapor; the leftover e-liquid has no place to go but the air chamber, resulting in a gurgling sound and e-liquid into your mouth or fall down to the top of the battery/ vaping technique is different than smoking technique -- use a longer, gentler, draw technique which will allow the coil(s) time to vaporize the e-liquid you suck to them/

If its on the outside of the battery I've had this happen twice.

Once I had seal mess up in a coil and it lightly leaked out from the air hole in the knurled base (kanger t3s). It was nearly unnocitable leaking out just felt greasy and I could see it once it built up.

The second time (also a t3s) the plastic for the tank had gotten a hairline crack at the base. It wasn't visible because it was actually cracked beneath the metal the base screws into. Eventually get t got big enough to see.

Don't forget there's also a fair amount of condensation that's happening and depending on the type of battery and the threads on the tank the aluminum or metal will turn black along with the condensation will make a blackish kind of a liquid around the threads and even down in the battery connector but you're almost guaranteed 100% to have moisture get in there
All tanks leak a little bit it's an impossible thing to get away from
Some are just better than others

One thing I do on my tanks and have yet to have one leak is to do what I call a double seat when you screw down anything that has an O ring. Basically its just a matter of screwing down the piece gently then unscrewing it just to a looser position then screwing it down finger tight just to the point where regular force stops. I do this with most my coil heads just to promote some space filling by letting the ring compress and expand briefly. This works best with the Iclear series tanks but I do it with my Kanger tanks as well even though there isn't a lot of sealing material and I never have leaks. The only tanks I haven't had to do this with at all are my various Aspire tanks, Nautilus Mini etc.

most of my older clearomizers (Evod2, Kanger mini Protank 3, CE4s) were bottom fed the air through the coils. i noticed a lot of condensation running building up on the top of the battery terminal on the inside. i always had to clean it before charging. My newer tanks draw air from the sides so this is not an issue.
