I thought of another one. I have read examples like "Outlawing vaping is like telling people on the Titanic to stay off the lifeboats because they have not been long-term tested" and "Outlawing snus is like outlawing seat belts because people have been injured while wearing seatbelts, and providing seat belts might encourage reckless driving."

But as nice as those images are, they are too extreme for a lot of folks (though I still would like to make cartoons out of them.)

How about "Would you let your child who drinks milk and water and fruit juice start drinking Coke or Pepsi all day? No, you wouldn't. But would you tell your uncle who drinks whiskey all day that Pepsi is not a safe alternative to whiskey if he was thinking of switching?"
What a great post !!! ... Thank You

Finally a use for all those ashtrays we used to keep lying around the house.

We should all of us, EVERY stinking one of us, gather up all of our old ashtrays and mail them off to the FDAs main headquarters with signature confirmation.

Maybe if they got bombarded with 50 ashtrays a day they would FINALLY get the picture.

Its the kind of off-the-wall approach that would definitely get some news interest, maybe even national and who cant afford 5 bucks to help a worthy cause?

LOVE the idea, but we should pick a different target. Obama(*), or the head of some House or Senate committee, or the Washington Post...

Depending on the target, we can decide whether or not to wash the ashtrays first.

(*) I am not anti-Obama.

I think if the ashtrays were just sent to the FDA with no note and no letter of explanation whatsoever for period of a couple of months and then a major newspaper were contacted with info on the story and why they were being sent it would make national news.

It would also serve to annoy the hell out of the people who are the biggest thorns in our side.Would HAVE to wash them otherwise they would claim someone tried to poison them or some other such nonsense.

No, don't! WALK them into your local firehouse! Take your e-cigs with you! Show them the lack of fire! I started another thread on this, your ashtray thread inspired me, we should sponsor cigarette lighter buybacks! Or ashtray buybacks! In public parking lots with miles of tape! If they're buying $400 guns for $100, then a $1.29 lighter should be 30 cents, right? Get the press out there!

Me, either! That's not the point! Instead of requiring proof of city residence like they do at gun buybacks, we'd require proof the person possses a e-cig and can make at least 1 puff on it. Our end would be funding and staffing buybacks, ONE per person, 25 cents. We could include ashtrays, but the point I want to make is that we are taking fire out of houses.

Maybe we could coordinate this for a certain day, "Vapers Against Fire", and do a bunch of cities in a short time period.

I'm swamped at work, and I don't know if this would get better publicity before or after the FDA makes it's "deeming", which is supposed to be followed by a public comment period.

We'd have to solicit donations, since the people doing the buybacks will PROBABLY only get a few (if we require proof of vaping) but have to be prepared for many.

OTOH, 25 cents apiece might be pretty easy to fund.

I like sending ...-trays into the FDA.

Ideally we should have access to an insider because after the first few 100 or so, they may block deliveries. We'd have to switch addresses, maybe everyday. Each ashtray should include a personal note telling them quit smoking thanks to a safer alternative - (not one that big pharma invented).

Actually, most of us have several ashtrays to get rid of. I think sending one to American Lung Assoc would be appropiate too.

I like the idea of sending ashtrays to the fda, I Like the idea of sending them to the white house even more.We need to take this discussion public and we need the press and we need it like yesterday. We should agree on the target, agree on the date to start and than start recruiting people now. I cant believe I just started vaping and than found out that i am in the middle of a battle with time running out at a highly alarming rate after. The general public has no clue whats happening or whats at stake and we have to change that or we are dead in the water here. How bout sending lighters too? I seriously have like 20 working bics in my possession and I can mail each of them separably.I have signed every petition I could find and wrote to everyone in my state I could find a address for. I can and need to do more, lets do it together and make sure our efforts count.Has anyone seen if the news media may carry some sort of human interest story on people who our using vaping to quit smoking? I think I will check with my local tomorrow.....

Lighters have other uses so I don't think they would be as effective.

All I can say is "do it"; the Asstray Revolt or something. Start a thread and see how many sign on. Most people have several or be willing to hunt down a few more if needed. Send them into every representative in their area. Get a good address for the FDA, maybe the new director's (he takes control in April). See what happens. It'll work if there's enough passion.

The included note about personal experience is important and that will keep it grass roots and not just another political thing. I'd give them no warning. Kind of like sending in shoes or sending Democrats pictures of a spine.

I already turned my cool cyber skull ashtray into a candy dish. It's great to offer my guest a skull full of gummy bears. The problem is that the FDA doesn't get kickbacks from PV venders. Maybe we should send the faxes of the profits from these companies, that might given them some interest in working out an "arrangement".

Can I send Republicans hacksaw blades labeled "anti-Norquist device" ?

My problem is I've been using Cara Mia artichoke jars for ashtrays for so long I don't have any real ones. Now I use the jars to clean Vivi Nova heads.

I'd have to buy one.

After my business trip, after Mom's arm is out of a cast, then I'd actually like to do something like finding a brick-and-mortar store to sponsor an ashtray buyback day, and then maybe mail THOSE to someone.... or maybe turn them in to a fire station? But that will be like May, and I hate to wait that long.

@aikanae1, are you thinking of sending them to reps proactively? I wanted to write my local county supervisor proactively, since there is an epidemic of local bans going around the area, but I couldn't quite figure out what to say.

"Just in case a wild-eyed anti-nicotine zealot talks another Supe into introducing a ban, could you please vote against it and notify me?" ???

or "I know some guys that heard RJ Reynolds reps are going around pushing bills to ban sales to minors but sneaking in a bunch of stuff to keep ecigs from competing with their current (combustible) and future (ecigs) product, can you please oppose such bills? I've enclosed asbestos armor in case you need it when they say 'for the children'" ???

Does CASAA have any advice for proactive letters?

I'd like to know if these bills being introduced are written similar.

Find a Goodwill and spend $0.35 on an ashtray. Steal one from a motel, or convert another smoker and grab theirs. Send one to American Lung Society and tell them your experience. It's always better when letters aren't formula. It might actually get read.
