I have looked at many of the modded e cigarettes and there is so much selection that it is somewhat daunting to try and figure out which one to get.

Based on these criteria, is there a general consensus...if not please just post your opinion on a model.

Safest,
Most Reliable,
Most Functional,
Best Vapor Producing,
Longest battery Life

I have a Super Six from Super T Manufacturing. I haven't owned any other mods but I'll tell you what I think on the Super Six:

Safety: Has a recessed button to prevent accidental firing. Has 3 vent ports in the body to direct gas away from your face and prevent an explosion if a battery should fail. Uses a protect 14500 battery for 3.6 volt vaping. Now the down side, it uses two unprotected CR2 batteries for 6 volt vaping. So you have to stop on 6V when the vapor drops off to prevent over depleting the batteries.

Reliability: It's extremely reliable, I've had almost zero problems out of it. You probably need to clean it with soap and water once every week or so, that's about it. I haven't owned any other mods, but many others have said the S6 is very reliable compared to other mods.

It's extremely well made with a simple design, so it should last a very long time.

Functionality: Simple and reliable design. Small and lightweight. Does 3.7 or 6 volts. Adapters available for 510, 801 (With adjustable draw), and 901 atomizers.

Vapor Production: It reliably delivers the correct voltage to the atomizer. The atomizer and juice will probably determine the vapor produced. The 510 is really great at 3.7 volts, I prefer the 901 for 6 volts.

Battery Life: The S6 is probably the smallest dual voltage device out there, so it uses smaller batteries than some other mods. I get 2-3 hours at 6 volts with moderate to heavy vaping. The 3.7 will be longer, not sure how much longer though.

The S6 is just a nice, well made, simple, and reliable device. Glad I bought it.

here's my $0.15 ...
i own and have owned many mods (but not all of them).

concerning your list:
Safest - as in no batteries issues? treat all your batteries properly. don't over charge/discharge, keep rotated, use in pairs. if there's a problem, ditch it. when a device is not in use, i take the batteries out. or do you mean on/off switch, vent holes etc?

Most Reliable - i've only had one device 'die' on me, my beloved lazer from ikenvape. i haven't taken it apart yet, but i think its the switch. many others have had mods die on them, but i tend to think those are small numbers compared to satisfied users for any individual mod.

Most Functional - define functional. cause unless they're broken they all vaporize the liquid. there are two models that deliver the liquid (juice box, AFS that i know of). i understand there may be one or two new ones coming soon.

Best Vapor Producing - out of everything i've owned, the juicebox is the hands down winner. though i should point out i don't go over 5v. tried it, didn't like it, i'm too wimpy i guess.

Longest battery Life - for the most part that's really a component of the battery, and not the mod itself. most of my mods use the 18650. i just switched over to the high drains today, but earlier reports indicate extra long life.

reading through this post, i realize i haven't answered your question and probably made you even more confused (or angry ;) )

so to that end, the mod on the top of my use list is the juice box. i know many have had issues with theirs, but i've not had a single one (and i own two of them).

The 'Burgh
Isn't this kind of like asking what the best religion is? E Cigs and Mods are chosen around personal preferences and personal experiences. Drop into the Chuck forum, and their users will swear by it. Same thing in GG, etc.

Safest: Well, 3.x Volts is "safer" than 5V+, but with good protected batteries and care, all of the professional mods can be used safely.
About the only thing that jumps out (to me) as a differentiator is whether is has an on/off switch in addition to the actuator.
Most Reliable: The metal mods built with a solid switch are more durable, but more reliable? If a mod is breaking all of the time, it doesn't last long (or have many fans). If you are not wanting to worry about being careful while you vape, lower voltages have less tendency to burn out atomizers, but that combats vapor production in many cases.
Most functional: Other than vaping, what functions are you looking for? Adapters are great, but they can be used on anything, so that's not a determining factor. One nice to have is a USB passthrough mode that charges while you vape, but it's not neccessary
Most vapor producing: Now the war starts. Higher voltage usually means more vapor, but combats reliability and safety. There's a thread for every type of mod claiming that it has way more vapor than anything else on the market.

There are dozens of mods that meet the qualifications of safe, reliable, functional and great vapor production. You need to go deeper to find differentiation.

To pick a mod, you need to pick your configuration.

Some questions you might want to add to your list:

What form factor do I like (box, tube, smaller, larger, etc.)?
How portable does it need to be?
How does it look (to me)?
How is the support? Read a few user threads to see if there are complaints about responsiveness.
How much / how easy to get are the consumable parts (atomizers, batteries, carts)?
Do I plan to Drip, Dip or use carts / cartomizers?
How much battery life do I need?
Which of my initial four qualifiers is the most important to me?

After you answer these questions, you can narrow your choices down to less than half a dozen. At that point in time, you are down to how much you want to spend, and who can get it into your hands the fastest.:p

Good luck with your search.

From what I understand the Janty ego is the only really mass produced e cig mod????

No offence to the guys who are building them one by one, they have my respect, but I'd like a modded e cig that has reached the level of mass or semi mass production. Partially for the fact that you know with reasonable certainty, the co. will be around for a while and its been tested by alot of people.

As far as features.

I would like.

1) Cartomizers (no atomizers)
2) 5V is best ????
3) USB PASS THROUGH for car and computer A MUST.
4) Manual oporation
