What is the best mech mod to start on?

Mechs are pretty much a battery in a tube. From there it really depends on how you prioritize what you want. Things like:
What do you want to pay - good $20 clone mechs to high end colectors mechs. If starting off clone see how many sold of the one you like. Stay mainstrem to start.
Looks - simple and clean, scuplted, wood etc.. - Looks and fits play a lot into my decision. I like the Nemesis. Caravella and King. Much harder to match up brass toppers than stainless. The RSST fits the Nemisis stainless really clean and matches the finish pretty close -
What device you want to use may dictate the mech. An AIOS is built for Chi-Yo and fit on a small group of devices A IGO fits just about any one with a 510.
What size - batteries - Some are telescoping some have tubes I think tube look cleaner (my opnion) but telescoping are much easier when changing battery lengths. - What batteries do you have on hand may decide. If sub ohming do you battery research.

Getting started the k-100 is probably one of the most popular first basic mod. I think from there it is the hype of the day for many.
I hate the depends answer but...it really does depend.
DO not buy into the ones hits harder than the next. There might be some small voltage drop in one vs another but in the end it is really your build that matters and what looks and feels right to you. Pick one, start low cost, see what you like about it and go from there. Trust me you will not stop at one.

It really doesn't matter. How you use your mechanical is more important than which mechanical you use. Most of the mechanicals out there are just knock-offs of the old Screwdriver design anyway. So look at the fit & finish if that's important to you, or look at the materials used if that's important to you, air flow management if that's imortant to you.
Look at a mechanical as being variable resistance instead of variable voltage or variable wattage. Still does the same thing, just uses a different mathematical formula to end up at the same place.

I agree with everyone who said it doesn't matter which mod you start with. Having said that, do your research before buying one because some have more issues and others have less. I will say that my K100 has performed very well for me since March 2013. All I've ever done is clean the contact surfaces and screw threads (they are also contact surfaces) monthly and the only misfires I've ever experienced were because the lock ring unscrewed and I didn't realize it.
More important is that you do the research so you understand the safety implications of using a mech mod. There are no safety features built into these mods, it's all up to you to keep yourself safe. If you are unsure about any of this, do more reading or feel free to ask about it any time
There are just too many to chose from and build quality should be your main concern.

well i tell people the smok magneto or the smok natural, the sigelli #8 is a good mod too and all are around 50$ or under
+1 towards the kamry k100...
Thing's built like a TANK! Fasttech sells em for around 30 bucks. Shipping is HECKA slow tho. Also if your gonna be dipping your toes into mech mods, I suggest looking for a reliable, safe chemistry battery. I never really trusted those gray no name brand batteries that come straight from China lol
