Thanks! I'd be interested in knowing how you got started with mixing. How did you know what you needed? Best places for supplies, starter recipes, etc.

I know I can find these answers on this site and others, but the sheer amount of information makes it overwhelming for somebody who is just a wannabe beginner. Any tips?
ejuice has 4 basic parts: PG, VG, Nicotine and Flavor(s). The purpose of the PG is to carry the flavor-- it's good at that; 1/3 or more of most commercially prepared sauces is PG-- and to thin the VG so it will wick well; PG also provides some throat hit if not as much as nicotine. The VG has a slightly sweet taste by itself, and it's what makes the fluffy while cloud when you exhale. The Nic should be obvious, and the flavors are where the taste comes from. I suggest you start at a 50/50 PG/VG ratio just to begin. If it's too harsh or you're getting no cloud, bias toward VG. Not enough throat hit or the flavor is muted, or the VG makes you cough or gives you phlegm, bias toward VG. One good way to get started is to purchase a starter kit, but you don't have to. You will need something to measure with and mix in. For small batches, 10ml syringes will do to measure; a small glass tumbler and a stainless spoon will get the rest of it done. (Mark the nic syringe-- red fingernail polish works) and use it only for that.) If you don't want to go the starter kit route, let me suggest you pick a real simple flavor, like peppermint. I mention this because one of my standard flavors is peppermint. Buy a minimum quantity of PG and VG and Nic juice, plus a small bottle of peppermint flavor and sweetener. Then using a juice calculator-- this is the one I use-- plug in your PG/VG ratio and the MG of nic you want, plus how much in total you wish to make. Start small, no more than 10 or 15 ml per batch until you get a recipe you like. You'll have to tell the calculator the bases in the nic juice and flavors; this is usually PG, but nic can be bought in VG or a PG/VG mix as well. Whatever it is, just plug it in. The place you buy them will tell you what the bases are when you order; frequently you can select it. The calculator will then tell you how much of each ingredient to add. Dump them in the glass and stir, or in a clean used juice bottle and shake. A good ratio to start is something like 12% peppermint, 3% sweetener. I take mine stiffer, I use 18/8, but that's very strong. Note that ejuice is best when you allow it to steep some before vaping. A couple days in the dark, shaking once or twice a day, is a big improvement. That's really for later though, you'll want to try it right away I'm sure. Finally, while there are many quality vendors, and some fly-by-nights, I buy my nic juice from MyFreedomSmokes and my flavors from Flavor Apprentice exclusively, and can vouch for their integrity, quality and rapid service.

Welcome aboard! Be gentle with yourself - no one is born into this world knowing everything and truly no one is going to make you sit a test and throw you out of Vape World just because you don't know absolutely all there is to know.

Just take things slow, enjoy the journey and learn things as you need to. It is truly said about this group that "There is no such thing as a Silly Question if you don't know the answer."

You've taken the biggest step already by choosing to go for vaping rather than smoking. Already you are beginning to stack up achievements by having not smoked the cigarettes you otherwise would have.

All the best on your voyage of exploration, and welcome again!

Welcome
& don't worry about everything in the world of Vaping just worry about not smoking. If the pen works that is all you need for now when & if it does not satisfy your cravings then it is time to move on to something else
I started DIY a couple months ago & really is not that hard. for me the best thing was getting a starter kit it has everything you need & then some
People said you don't need a kit but I am glad I did I found myself using stuff people said I wouldn't use & stuff they said I would need that I don't use. It is all personal preference but for me the kit was the right move

DIY is simpler and easier than home cooking. Most of the people who post in DIY section are trying to see how complicated they can make it. Unflavored liquid shouldn't cost more than 1 penny per ml. There are plenty of flavors available intended to be used alone. You can make good tasting liquid for less than 2 cents per ml. I spend 15-30 minutes mixing once a month.

Wow, thanks a bunch! This is real good basic information which is what I needed. A good place to start. :)

I was looking at starter kits, so I'm glad to see you and others recommend them. I think it would take some of the beginner guesswork out of the initial confusion. Do you recommend any?

I looked into kits last night, and I think it's a good place to start for me. By the time I need new supplies, I'll know a lot more. :)

That is how I felt in the beginning too now I know what I will use out of the kit & what I won't.what supplies you use really depends on the size of the batch you are making at a time

I never used one. I bought my first order from MyFreedomSmokes entirely. I selected 5 flavors (they sell Flavor Apprentice flavors, among others): peppermint, cinnamon, clove, spearmint and wintergreen, plus a small jug of PG, VG and nic juice. I still use the first three flavors every day, and lately branched out into fruits. My woman likes an apple-peppermint and an apple-cinnamon I do for her.

Northern NJ native , Coastal NC now.
I have spent a good part of last night and today reading posts, library articles, and other information on ECF. Wow, so much to take in!

The jargon is overwhelming. I read some explanations, but I'm still mega-confused. In the end, I gave up trying to learn it all. I'll figure it out as I go, and if and when I need to.

I looked at a whole heap of pictures of people's hardware, and my eyes crossed. :) I started wondering if I'm using the right stuff myself. In the end I decided that the little "pens" I'm using are working for me, and I like them. :)

I have thought several times that I'd like to mix my own e-liquids, but after reading some of the DIY stuff, I think I might need a degree in mixology! :) I did learn a whole heap about WTA, which was interesting, and super-applicable to me.

I learned that I'm not alone with a lot of the things I'm experiencing, and have discovered much good advice. :) The main thing I learned is that I still have a lot to learn! :)

ECF is , without question , the most valuable site with the best information to be found anywhere on the web .

No other forum comes remotely close to it's mind boggling amounts of information regarding everything e cig .

Enjoy , remember it's not necessary to learn "everything " about e cigs and you will burn yourself out trying to do so . The more you participate the more stuff you learn as expected though.

Welcome @RoseJ and congratulations on discovering vaping and ECF. Just wanted to add my vote to the others who say that if the pen is good enuf for you then it's good enuf.. I started vaping in June with an eGrip mod and a pen as backup. I've since won some of the higher power Temp control mod thru contests here in the forums. All my fancy new Mods have found their way back into their original boxes and I'm happily vaping away on my old school gear. Ya don't have to keep up with the Joneses to enjoy your vape. Love my Evod and Sigelei ZMax V3 low power Mods.

As far as DIY, start simple. A few suppliers sell their flavoring premixed for you. You just purchase PG, VG & nicotine fairly close to the strength you vape (not too close as the PG, VG & flavoring will reduce the strength).
That way you can practice mixing and you'll get something vapable.

what kind of clothes do you wear, what kind of food do you eat, what kind of car do you drive.... are they the same as everyone elses? most likely not.... vaping is just as personal as the other things in your life.... sample different things and you will eventually find what suits you.... theres alot of people out there that will tell you what is best for you, but do they know you well enuf to tell you properly?....

Lol, I gotta agree with you on this place being full of confusing jargon that I've never heard of in real life. I felt like an idiot, but at the same time proud, when I realized what analog meant... It will take some time for us to catch up I'm sure.

We all start feeling like everyone is talking in a different language. I still remember how my brain felt like it was going to explode with all the jargon that I was reading. Heck, I didn't even know what an atomizer was

You all will be amazed at how quickly you will pick up all of this. If someone types something in shorthand (example: RDA = Rebuildable Dripping Atty) just ask what that means. You will get many people jumping in to tell you what the answer to your question is. :)

Enjoy your journey!
