This thread prompted me to look for a short story I read it the New Yorker in the 1980s. I can't believe I remembered enough to track it down. I had no idea it was written by Garrison Keillor.

"The last cigarette smokers in America were located in a box canyon south of Donner Pass in the High Sierra by 2 federal tobacco agents in a helicopter who spotted little smoke puffs just before noon. The district chief called in the ground team & 6 men, members of a crack anti-smoking joggers unit, moved across the terrain, surrounding & subduing them with tear gas. There were 5 people in their mid-40's who'd been on the run since the adoption of the 28th Amendment..."

 My oldest had been nagging me to quit smoking for the longest. The last nag time, my response was I was supporting thru the federal taxes I paid on each pack the new insurance program for the CHILDREN. She looked stunned and never more nagged me again. Think she researched the taxes paid on cigs and where it went. Also, think she was "conflicted." :p

Where I live there is a debate going on about legalizing MJ for recreational use (medical has passed). In both cases the debate isn't about saving the children, it's about how much it will be taxed and who will get the revenue. On the radio recently they were strongly pushing for the money to go to schools. I got a big laugh out of that.
