I just started mixing tonight. My first attempt was a Flavorers Apprentice RY4. It came out flat and tasteless even at 30% RY4. About the only flavor was a slight piney sort of taste in the background, but no tobacco, no vanilla, and no Carmel. It has me wondering if I got a bad batch. Unfortunately, since I never had a batch before, that's hard for me to answer! This is rebottled TFA in a house bottle, so I suppose someone might not have shook it up enough before splitting it into smaller bottles. This is not so much a bad taste as no taste except stuff it shouldn't taste like. Any thoughts?

Second attempt was a piña colada which came out OK but really didn't pop. I'm thinking some sweetener for sure but the taste seems less distinct than I'd like though it doesn't seem to be on the weak side. Any thoughts on making it pop. I just want to make everything louder than everything else, just like when I mixed live acts!

TFA has 3 different kinds of RY4:

RY4 Type 1
RY4 Double
Asian RY4

Which one do you have? If you are getting a "piney" taste, you probably have the RY4 Type 1. It is a "perfumey" taste that indicates (to me) that it is very heavy on the Vanilla. Here is a thread discussed that particular flavor.

However, regardless of which RY4 you are using, 30% is quite over the top. For the RY4's the most commonly used % range is 5 - 10%.

Lastly, it will take a some steeping time for the tobacco flavors to come out. At least 1 week, but for TFA Tobaccos, according to various forum member it is often more. On a RY4 Double that I mixed, the tobacco flavor didn't really come out until about 12 days.

Hope that helps.

Youre welcome - you should probably dilute the juice, so that your flavoring comes down to about 10% content
Yeah, when I didn't get the taste I dumped a bunch more in. 'Course, if I leave it as is, I'll probably have a nice story for the disasters thread... "So there I was grabbing my throat as I fell to my knees retching!" Or something along those lines. :D

I just made a small batch of the TFA Double RY4 and I can concur that it tastes pretty flat.

I made 2 small batches, one at 10% flavor and one at 13%. I steeped them in hot water last night then loaded an evod with each. Yup, flat with very little flavor and totally colorless. Now they are sitting in my closet with the lids off where they will stay for a week when I will toot on them again. I hope steeping helps. Not that I would miss the small investment, but I would like to have some success at this.

My flavoring was re-bottled as well by RTS. I'm pretty sure (?) that it just needs to steep.
