Shel Silverstein wrote this and many others for Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show. What is different here is that it is a true story for the writer. Apparently, only the name was changed. She, and the Mother knew who they were and never told anyone, but an investigative reporter tracked them down much later. They were surprised because they never told anyone how they related to the song. Anyway, he wrote many for Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show. They had many hits...in their lane of music.
