Honolulu, Hi
So after some hellacious hiccups with getting my Reo Grand, i've been pretty stoked on its performance over the last few months. Been using these Volcano brand cisco spec 2.0 ohm 510 atties so far, and while the vapor production isn't too mind blowing, they seem to work really well. They're a little over priced, but you can't beat being able to buy them down the street.

Getting tired of having them leak all over the place when they're filled though, and having them acquire that nasty burnt taste after abt a month of use, so i'm gearing up to buy a rebuildable, and of course the RM2 seems the perfect match.

So i'm just looking for recommendations on what to buy with it. I know i'll need either some nichrome or kanthal wire, and some wick, but that's abt where my knowledge ends. Silica seems logical since it seems like it'd have less a tendency to burn up than cotton. Dunno about the gauge of the wick or the wire though. Suggestions?

For me, cotton blows silica out of the water. It seems like it would burn up, but as long as you keep it wet, it'll last two or three days. Replacing the wick takes less than five minutes.

28 gauge kanthal and some organic cotton balls are pretty much all I use. an 18 gauge blunt-tip needle comes in handy for wrapping micro coils.

You've made a wise choice. You won't be disappointed.

I am assuming you are using a mechanical Reo Grand and not a VV Reo Grand. I happen to like using silica wick, but I am in the minority. For my normal build, I just wrap about 5 or 6 wraps of 30 gauge Kanthal around a 1.5mm piece of Ekowool. I then push all of the wraps as closely together as I can. This usually produces a good vape for me.

Many RM2 owners have also started building micro coils though with great results. I use a 1/16" drill bit and wrap 28 or 30 gauge Kanthal. I have started using cotton in these types of coils though. It is just easier.

In a nutshell, if you have never rebuilt an atty, I would say get 28 gauge and 30 gauge Kanthal (not the flat/ribbon kind), a small diameter silica/Ekowool, and some sterile cotton. That way you can try a few different builds and see what suits you. In addition, I would also recommend some tweezers, a tiny screwdriver, and a drill bit. You may want to buy these items new, since they may have been used in not the cleanest of environments.

Lastly, I use this guy: Helping Hands Jig With Alligator Clips at Menards However, I had a stroke about 3 years ago leaving my right hand not very functional. So the necessity for this item is much greater for me than for people who the use of both hands. It definitely is not a must-have for everyone.

cotton will rock your socks off......28 or 30g should be fine.....with 30g i can get a good 5 wraps for 1.1 ohms or with 28g i can do 4 wraps for a .6 ohm.....both are great but i use the 1.1 ohm for my VV Grand and the .6 ohm for my GRAND.

Its kinda hard to dry the cotton out when you can squonk after a couple drags or so.......

Honolulu, Hi
Thanks for the info guys. Keep it comming!

Question: How long do your builds usually last you folks? Wicks? Wire? I don't mind changing a wick a couple of times a week so long as it isn't the same pain as changing a carto in a tank was. What abt the wire? That seems the more time consuming bit.

Oh, and what exactly do you get when you purchase an RM2? The atomizer obviously but i'm guessing the o-rings for the catch cup aren't included?

I use a peanutbutter mix and change my wick and burn my coil every day. My issue is with the juice I use, my coils gunk up really quick and it doesn't take long before I can taste the difference. I like a fresh coil so I have to use devices that are easy to clean. Using the RM2 makes it super easy and quick! I use 28g kanthal/micro coils and cotton. cheap cheap cheap! easy easy easy! It takes less than 5 minutes and I'm back to vaping. The beauty of micro coils and cotton is you don't have to keep recoiling.. the coil will last and last weeks or months. 5 minutes to slide out the old wick, dry burn the gunk off the coil, slide in the new wick, refill the bottle and change the batt.

I've used most every type of device there is.. the Reo Grand and RM2 is by far the easiest, most hassle free best vape I've ever had. I love my other devices just as much and they all work well and have their place but I have to say, the Reo and RM2 is everything I'd hoped they would be and more. :)

how do you use the helping hands when building coils? my right hand went completely numb a feew years ago and is next to useless. i have a pair of helping hands similar to that, but i can't get my head around how i would use it making coils.

There's a coiling jig floating around here.. I can't find it right now but I'm sure someone will chime in to where to get it. It looks like it would be perfect for you. I'll post SXD's video below.

When you order the RM2, get some spare post screws, they are cheap and if you lose on you're out of action for a few days.

The best thing about the RM2 is you can play with the coil build and wicking material to find what you like. Experiment with several types of wicking. I like ekowool which is a hollow silica wick, I can fit 1mm ekowool into a .055" or 1/16" ID micro coil. Right now I'm playing with a ceramic wick in a 5/64 ID coil. Next I'll be trying bamboo and then hemp fibers.

Thanks guys, think i'm just abt ready to order one up. RM2, spare post screws, 28g and 30g Kanthal wire, 2mm dia. silica wick, anything else?

My better half was going to order it up for me as an early Christmas present, and I was hoping to ask her to put the order in tonight, but I think i'll hold off till tomorrow as she's quite livid with me atm for doing some unspeakable things

I think the perfect "noob coil" is the one I have settled on.
1/16
28G Kanth.
8 wraps
~1.0 ohm
boiled cotton wick.

simple to make (even for me) simple to re-wick.. epic plumes. Just about free once you have the basics. :)

Good luck.
I've never had anything except an RM2 on my Grand.

I'd actually like to try a carto on it.. just to see what it's like..
For educational purposes only you understand...

I use the alligator clips to hold the wire and wick (if I am using silica). Then, I have my left hand free to wrap the coils. Plus, the alligator clips hold onto things enough I am able to pull the coils tight. With micro coils, I use the alligator clips to hold the drill bit. I then put the wire in the clip and fold it the opposite way I am wrapping the coil. That way it stays pretty tight.
