hi guys.. so I have a caterpillar rda on a 18650 mechanical mod(dunno the name , was never told) and I just recently started building my coils. my first single coil without a ohm meter(pretty stupid , I know) caught on fire.. so I stopped until I got the right wire & equiptment. now that I have 28g a-1 kanthal.. what'd be a safe ohm build to have daily? i vape at 0.54 ohms on a dual coil & the battery never gets hot. but I don't want it to blow up in my hand so.. any suggestions? I use a Sony vtc5 btw.

Are you sure your Sony VTC5 batteries are real? From my understanding most of the ones being sold now are fakes. When and where did you buy your batteries?

You need some kind of ohm meter to have any clue to the resistance of your build. If you dont, you could push your batteries beyond their limits and have serious issues.

The limits of how low you can build depends on your battery and whether or not they are authentic.

So, Rollin,
Does the right wire and equipment include an ohm meter or a digital multimeter? I don't want to assume anything, but you said you are vaping at .54 ohms/dual coil...

You can use this calculator Battery drain | Steam Engine | free vaping calculators to calculate your battery drain. If you need an explanation on how to use the Steam Engine, here are some blog posts...

As long as you have an ohm meter and correct batteries (which you have) then you should be fine. As stated by another above - referring to an ohms law calculator is almost always a must, at least until you are experienced with rebuilding and can tell how many amps a certain build will pull.

I don't mean to be negative when I say this but what is it with a lot of new vapers jumping straight into sub ohming? To me it seems like trying to run before you can walk. There isn't anything wrong with a 1 ohm single micro coil.

I honestly just always end up building lower ohm builds & prefer the vapor production.. I don't mind anything 1ohm & above.. just a preference for me I guess.

4.2 Volts / 0.07 Ohms = 60 Amps or 252 Watts
3.7 Volts / 0.07 Ohms = 53 Amps or 196 Watts

That's 1/6 the power of my electric room heater on high, 1/3 of it on low. Lot of power to vaporize liquid.

EDIT: I'm just curious, have you ever checked the voltage under that load? Wonder what the battery is supplying with that much current drawn from it.

We do not talk about unsafe practices here on ECF.

Why build a coil so low that it's unpleasant to vape and most likely tastes like dirt (or worse).

Batteries in the vape industry are often mislabeled and not what you think they are. That can be very dangerous. People who don't know Ohm's Law, don't have a GOOD multi-meter, and don't know positively what their batteries are capable of, are a danger to themselves and to others around them. They become "headlines."

I'm glad to see we have members here that are helping and pointing out the dangers!
