What's going on with Kanger coils lately?

I didn't read the whole thread, so this have already been mentioned. Edward @ Sun Vapers was involved in the original Protank design. He is a very straight forward guy and picky about gear. Kanger has recently "improved" the PT/EVOD heads. Oh joy.

Kanger Protank eVod atomizer heads in 1.8 2.2 and 2.5 ohm for $5.79

The problem I have had is a tight draw I never had before. I have been using a PT1 I got from Edward when they were first released and have grown to like the airy draw. I have an Aero tank base on order, but in the meantime I was messing around with the heads. I was comparing the old heads with the the new ones and I noticed something. The edge of the insulator (where the bottom pin fits in) is a tiny bit thicker on the new ones than the old ones. Hmmm... It might be enough to interfere with the airflow.

I'm not sure they are all that way (I have a jar of used heads and beyond the two I was looking at yesterday I'm not exactly sure which is which), but I'm going to see if I can confirm my impression by switching the insulators when I get around to rebuilding the coils. Yeah, get around to it. Rebuilding PT heads reminds me of watching grass grow.

ETA: The improvement wasn't that recent (this article is from December), but I had a bunch of heads stock piled, so didn't notice the difference until I bought more..

Anyway, it appears I may be correct that the bottom insulator grommet thingy is causing problems:

I don't know about those Kangar coils............ I buy the 1.8 ohms, bring em home, test them, and they are anywhere from 2 to 2.2 ohms

........so i'm rebuilding, but I rebuild with 30gauge a 7/6 wrap, comes out to about 1.75ohms.........
and more surface than 32ga, so more flavor........ that was a recommendation by Mac btw...... he was right!

Sorry it took so long for me to reply.

I loathed MT3's from the get go. The replacement heads are horribly shoddy, and out of anything clearo that used silica, the MT3's muted EVERYTYHING, and gave it an "off" taste.

I steer people away from the Kanger MT3's these days. Other than their sub-par coils, they leak like crazy. I've talked to countless vapers who say the Kanger coils last about 3 days. I could live my entire life, never see a Kanger T3S and the words "It's leaking" again and be forever happy. "This thing leaks" is the most frustrating thing I have to deal with on a daily basis. 99.99% of the time, it is user error, but I'm not allowed to say that.

My schpiel goes like this when it comes to a Kanger T3S:

"Never ever let it get low. When it's half empty, fill it right back up again."
"Never ever crank the atomizer base on too tightly, and never crank the tank itself down hard onto your battery. Finger-tight is all anything ever needs to be."
"Draw slow and gentle. Let the atomizer do the work for you. Don't puff like a real cig or draw super hard because you're angry. Modify your draw technique. Long and slow, take your time, pull it into your mouth, and then inhale. The atomizer needs a half-second to get hot to vaporize your juice."
"When you fill the tank up with liquid, it creates pressure in the tank. As you use it and the liquid level drops, the pressure changes inside of the tank. If you let it get too low, it WILL leak, gurgle, and spit liquid back into your mouth. Keep it full!"
"Inspect the o-rings around your atomizer base. If they are ripped/torn/compromised, these will leak."
"Don't leave the device in your car during the summer or winter months.. Heat makes liquid more 'watery' and it can flood your tank. Cold can make your liquid more viscous and syrupy, and cause burnt or dry hits.

Rarely does anyone ever listen to or follow my advice.

If a Kanger T3S was a living person I would throat-punch him. I HATE those things with a passion that burns like a million fiery suns.

Personally, I'm a T3S lover. I've had a ton and a half of issues with them; dry hits then leaking then more dry hits, but since I made myself learn to rebuild the coils and --more importantly by far!-- use the proper amount of wicking, I haven't had a single problem that WASN'T "user error" -- I got so used to dry hits all the time, that the other day, using one of the coils I've rebuilt, I was giving it a lot of priming puffs -- and flooded the stupid thing, because it had plenty of juice and didn't need more!

The problem is that it's a very, very fine balance between the juice, the wick, and the heat of the atty, and changing any one of those variables even slightly can completely change the character of the vape, and its potential for misbehavior; thick juice, too much wick: dry hit; thin juice, thin wick: leaking; power turned up too high, dry hit; too low, gurgle and leak. It's so difficult to strike that perfect balance for each juice, I don't blame anyone who gives up on them. I just like them, they deliver twice the flavor of both protank-coiled tanks I have. I finally got some "hollow braided ekowool" silica, and that stuff has fixed my problems with dry hits, and I'm not having leaks either. But, I ordered a Kayfun yesterday, so my T3S' pride of place may be passing... ;) Just when I learned how to maintain 'em right! :D

Many of us went down the same path with the t3, and after all that; ultimately we had to move on.

Unless that Kayfun I ordered can tapdance, do my dishes, and whistle Dixie, I'll probably keep using my T3S tanks regularly -- I've got 4 of 'em, and tons of coils that I've learned to rebuild *and wick properly!* so I doubt I'll be giving up on 'em. ;) You know what grief I went thru, trying to get the right kind/amount of wick so it won't leak, and won't taste awful. At this point, I feel like if I can make and wick *these* coils properly, the Kayfun ought to be a breeze!

Actually last week was my first experience with genuine KangerTech coils, I switched because of leakage/flooding. Made a huge difference, as since I had been fighting this issue since I got my Astro mod (clone) with a DPure PuriTank beak in January.

It was a gut call on my end that it was possibly the coils & it turned out to be true, no more leaks/floods & really good taste. Plus, at 2.5ohms, both of my devices runs much cooler. Which results in less scorched e-juice draining down after top off/refills.

Since I haven't been using the brand long, I can't state how bad they are, but can say they're still better than generic castoffs.

Hopefully these were simply a bad lot of coils.

I joined this thread just to join in on the Kanger bashing. To those who get good service out of them, wow. You must have the magic touch.

I used my Kanger stuff for target practice. There is a twisted chunk of metal nailed to a tree not far behind my house that is the remains of an Aerotank.

Destroying them was the only satisfaction I ever got out of Kanger gear, lol

For the few things I still use clearomizers for, I use Aspire products.

In a way, I should thank Kanger. Were it not for the uniformly terrible experience they gave me, I might not have moves on to RDA and RBA's.

ROFL... I once had a 20MB (yes that's right MEGABYTE) HD that I used as a doorstop. The old 5.25 form factor was good for that! And I had a western digital caviar 80MB (yep, megabytes) that sat on a shelf as an object lesson for many years after it just stopped working -- the object lesson was "even Western Digital drives can die for no apparent reason."

It's possible that after I get that Kayfun, I will wonder whatever could have possessed me to persist so long with these T3S tanks -- well, mainly, budget -- they cost $6 each, I can't argue with that, when my PT II Mini AND my Hypertank2, $12 and $13 respectively, seem to have no flavor whatever, no matter what I do to the coils, and the $30 Nautilus just sucked something awful, and yeah it was a genuine Aspire. I got a really excellent price for the "full kit" KFL+ on eBay, but still... $30? I won't be able to buy many of those, no matter how great they are.

The Nautilus, and this cheapie DCT I just got, have taught me something important, though: I HATE DUAL COILS! I do have a single-coil XL "DCT" carto on the way, and hopefully it will be a lot better, but the only thing I could do with the Nautilus was sell it.

I hear you andria, My old t3 did nothing but flood from the first fill, but didn't want to buy another so I kept working with it till I got it fixed and working great.. The experience you gain in making this thing work great give you an understanding of how to make it all work.. I actually just dug it out and put a build in it for my wife since the evod cracked. You will find the kayfun to be much easier to build and better vape. The experience you have will make the kayfun a quick success. The t3 will be delegated to backup.

My main point was stock coils are usually bad, and only can handle moderate vaping. Rebuilding is a major improvement but can't compare to an rba tank.

Here's a weird thing, and I think it's my own fault: although the coils I made yesterday and the day before work great in terms of no dry hits, no leaking, good vapor -- there's very little, and a somewhat odd, taste. The reason I think it's my own fault is that thing about "torching" a silica wick before use -- I forgot to do that. Could that be why, although they're working well mechanically, they're not giving any flavor?

There was another which I did a few days ago, and it was giving *awesome* flavor, till just this morning it started to taste a little burned, so I took it out and put in one of the newer ones I did, and then got that very-little-and-rather-odd taste. Just to see if I was imagining it, I pulled out a brand new stock coil and used it instead, and got the flavor back.

Does torching the wick influence the taste that much?
