heh... it *is* kinda funny, we seem to be on very much the same page about what constitutes a good mod, and a good next step. I was thinking at first about maybe a mech, because of all this possible 'vapocalypse' stuff, but I confess they kinda scare me; it would seem that one needs to be a real whiz at electronics and math, to use those safely, and I'm really just a ......o at math, no kidding. Electronics, love em, but not math, never math! So, bring on the vw! The iTaste spoiled me right off the bat, my first "mod" after the eRoll, but I want the replaceable batteries. I think it was Wednesday, before I knew it the afternoon was gone and I had spent the whole day reading that SVD thread, but I'm really glad I did. Then I saw the Sigelei thread for one of the very next I was looking at, after the SVD, and started reading there, and found a lot of good info; I only bounced thru that one, so at some point I need to read the whole thing. Did you know that the Sigelei is on sale right now, at Desert Vapes? I wish I had the $$$ right now, but I don't, so I'm hoping they stay in stock till next weekend! *crossing fingers*

I don't think you need to know any math... the math is mostly trying to figure out which is the best battery to use for longest life. You just see what everyone else is buying and get one of those

There's so many recommendations on this forum that for a beginner, it's a bit overwhelming to try to decide where to start. But know that the most recommended or most used mods have a following for a reason. They are great vapes, in a design the person likes best.
Breaking it down into categories and the most popular (obviously tons more in each category):
Tube regulated mods -like the Provari, Semovar, ZMax, Vamo
Tube mech mods and their clones - like Nemesis, Origin, IChing, Magneto
Kicked Tubes- regulated, but the regulation is removeable or replaceable - these are the newest, like the 18 Arhat
Box Regulated - MVP2, VTR, DNA's (like Hana, ZNA), Darwin
Box Unregulated Mech - REOs (all), most wood mods
Uniques - Microstick (unregulated box), Billet Box (kicked box)
Pipes- E-pipe, Kamry 1000
Right now, I'm leaning towards the box mods, unregulated as my all time favorites, but I have a pretty good collection of both types.
My current boxes (3 more I'm expecting and I should have all the boxes I want).

I had the same dilemma you did, basically started with a MVP2, then Provari, then started looking around for what else. The easiest way to tell is to buy everything you read about, then compare, which is pretty much what I did. But most mods have a following for a reason, and they are all good reasons. At this point, my kicked or unregulated are the hands down winners for ease of use and vape quality, and I'm pretty much out of categories to compare.
My favorite tube is the 18 Arhat in the front of the above (and nearly the cheapest).
My favorite box is the Reo Woodvil (I must like em, I got 2)
My favorite 18350 mini is the Microstick
I expect that when I get my Dibi, that will become my favorite box tho.

Reo is all I need I think, for box mods. But I'd like to have 2 with 2-3 18650s each.

If you don't have vw, you need to know what resistance your topper is, and from that, figure out what voltage to set it at. I was doing that, but when I got so many diff coils of so many different Ω levels, I said to heck with it, and started using the vw so I don't have to do math just to get my nic on. In the morning, I can't even be bothered to fill a tank, I just grab a carto that I know has juice in it. So math is not my strong suit at ANY time of day, but when I first wake up... purple, because aliens don't wear hats! Just set the vw and let IT figure out what the right voltage is!

I just relocated my kitchen knives, so I could use the drawer they were in for my growing collection of vape stuff. Hi Andria, I don't usually set either VV or VW. Most people's recommendations for coil builds are pretty spot on, you build that, and you set your VV or VW the first time and that's that. There's a myth I keep reading about people having to fuss with VV... you can of course, but that tends to be the very first day you got the unit and you are going to fuss because it's your new toy. Once you get used to it, with a build you like (this is the sticker here), you are very unlikely to need to set it again.
For how to build, easiest is to just read or ask people on the forum how many coils for which RBA. If you watched a video for building coils, they show you/tell you how many coils. After vaping that, you can immediately tell if you want to go up or down from there.
For example, my current favorite is the REO Woodvil. I saw a recommendation for 6 coils for sub-ohming. I knew I couldn't sub ohm on the Woodvil, so I needed more coils. I had a corsage pin laying around, so I used that, no idea diameter. So I made a 9 wrap. That came out to 1.1 ohms, which was right about where I wanted it to be, checked it on the Provari (When I started coil building, I didn't own any checkers, just the Provari, and that was fine). Set it, and tested. I ended up at 8 coils on my corsage pin, which worked great for me.
REO do not have any settings, they are not regulated. The entire concept of needing to 'set' your mod changes a bit after you get a few mechs. The key is to find your personal sweet spot for a mod, and then you can just forget it. I keep my Kayfun on my Provari, it's always at 1.1 ohms and the mod is at 3.8. That's what works for me, and I don't need to change it or think about it. I don't play with the VV any more than any other mod I have (not often).
I think of it like setting the thermostat on the Air Conditioner or Heat. Sometimes I want more or less, but not usually. I totally agree with the convenience of cartos! I still use both cartos and BDC heads... but I dont' generally change settings on them either. Maybe because I'm used to the mechs, I recharge batteries more often so they are always near the top of their range, and the batteries I buy all have very even energy discharge curves, so I don't need to mess with the settings as often.
As for hoarding vape gear, it's become a hobby... and an affirmation of my commitment not to smoke. Besides, mods are always sellable for close to what you paid for them if you take decent care of them, so buying to see if you like it or not first is not as expensive as it seems. Vaping stuff at least is reasonably small... I think of all the other things I've 'collected' and this is not bad

Well I finally had a good reason to clean up the unholy mess of my vape stuff; I won't take pics of that! 
Anyway I thought I'd post that pic I mentioned, how my vape stuff is basically taking over half of one of my kitchen counters; my knife collection was evicted from that drawer, so I'd have a place to put all that junk that's in it -- all those bottles of juice were in front of the knife bin, and gradually pushing them further and further back in the drawer. It's a durn good thing I have this big kitchen now; at the last place we lived, this stuff would have already run me out of half my available counter space! There's another growing collection of little bottles, in the top drawer of a chest in my bedroom, hopefully growing more tasty in the dark. Also the eRoll sits in the living room, pretty much abandoned. I haven't put either of the eRolls into the PCC in a while, and the charging light in the PCC never comes on. I might ought to give it a charge now and then just to keep it alive.

. I suspect there's lots of people with a bigger collection than mine tho.
Quick note... the TMax is really a beautiful mod. I keep it because maybe someday I can pull it apart and use the body for something... but right now, the design is so flawed, I would not recommend it. it vapes fine, but the unit is heavy, and it leaks right through the body. That means a juice leak can drip juice all over the circuit board and internals (another that does, and did it, is the itaste 134). Given how many I have, I can tell you the comparative drawback for each, and while the TMax is gorgeous, there are much better mods for use.
Purplepeeps, try to get ECF verified asap... I'm running a coop in the sections you can't see, the deadline for signup is Friday. It's for the 18 Arhat, one of the newest mods in 2014, and you will love it. It's the rainbow one in front of the group of tubes, and my favorite round tube mod right now.
I have the Sigelei ZMax V5 in stainless. It's a nice regulated mod, but I find the controls a bit aggravating (WAY too many button pushes to get to the most important functions), and while I've had no issues with mine, I've seen people complain about the button switch going bad. It's a lovely mod, but it's so close to a Provari that you are better off with the Provari for durability.

just a warning. if you happen across a reo, your plans may be shot. the prothingy is more likely to be a backup to a reo in most cases.
