Any particular reason you don't want to take it apart? It's so easy to take apart, and I like to rinse everything really well and use just a drop of dish soap only on the plastic tube. Then I take the plastic top piece off the atty, rinse that well under tap water (cold works fine). Pat the wicks dry, dry burn til no smoke and I can see all the coils glowing well. Rinse very well after dry burn, pat wicks dry again, reassemble fill and vape. easy peasy

I would think that no "smoke" would indicate no moisture. Then it's time to dry burn until you can see the coils clearly. Blow on the coils while they're glowing and tap the top to get rid of excess crap that's keeping the coils from showing themselves brightly. If all else fails, a wooden toothpick can loosen up charred gunk leftover from thick liquids. Once you can see all of the coils individually glowing uniformly, you can put it all back together and fill it up. Do "not" dry burn more than a few seconds at a time or your wick "will" burn - even silica will char to the point where it will separate from the coil and threads will simply fall off - at that point, you've gone too far (it still may be useable but it won't work as well as a full wick).

If there is gunk on the coil it will burn off ( with a small amount of smoke) then you should be able to see the whole coil when it is degunked

I use hot water to rinse the wicks, pat the wicks dry, then do a dry burn. Some people recommend Isopropyl rubbing alcohol, but I haven't used this yet. Whatever you use to rinse the wicks, make sure you do the dry burn. I was first scared that I would burn out the coil by doing a dry burn, but once I did it, I realized what I was missing and I'll never clean the vivi nova again without doing it. The difference in vapor production and flavor after a dry burn compared to just rinsing it is just amazing.

I'm into my second week of Vivi Nova. After using cartos for years a $2.99 replacement head once or twice a week seems cheap. I've watched the Pusardio video where he rebuilds a VV head. I'll have to dive into a rebuild and see if my thoughts change toward doing that. I only washed cartos once and decided it was easier to toss and replace. The washed cartos always tasted weak to me.

ETA: My first attempt at dry burning a washed VV resulted in one cherry red glow after the moisture evaporated, then nothing. My Provari showed OP (open). It could have been that the head was loosened during cleaning and I needed to tighten it up. I've have to go back and ohm check the head by itself.

I have actually quit cleaning the heads. I have five Minis and ordered one more and two full size Novas last night. I now have enough tanks to fill one with each of my favorite flavors. I have Minis that have been running the same head, with NO cleaning, for 5 weeks now. The taste is still fantastic. The record for me with no cleaning is 6 weeks. I started getting a burnt taste, which no amount of cleaning will get rid of, so I pitched the head into my pile of heads to keep for when I get into rebuilding.

Having a tank for all of my flavors prevents me from having to clean out to switch flavors and I have found that there is really no need to clean periodically. YMMV.

When there is moisture, it will hiss, but not really "smoke" The smoke you see when dryburning is after it's dry and you are then burning off the gunk on the coils. That causes the smoke and the smell. But blowing on the coils while they're glowing is the best way I know of to pop a coil. Once it pops, it's dead. You've definitely been lucky if you've been doing this and haven't popped your coils.

After about 4-5 tanks (2.5 ml tank) I don't get as good of a throat hit or as much flavor and that's when I know it's time to clean it, but each person is different.
