ok so to get rid of hot spots on your coil on a rba atty, we are told to poke and prod it until it glows evenly. This makes me feel like a cave man inspecting fire for the first time. Why am I poking it? Do I poke the glowing one? Do i prod the one below it? There has to be rhyme, reason, or method. Is there any set formula for getting rid of a hot spot or are there just too many variables to have a set equation?

Going into this, lemme say that I understand the terminals need to be secure, I know the wick needs to be oxidized.

some of it is trial and error ,the rba forums have lots of info on this.

with that being said, i have found the coils need to be even in tension, they cant be, some loose some tight, using the drill bit method helps.next they have to be evenly spaced, or only a few will glow, and cant be all uneven one side, even on the other side or all crooked, it has to be a uniform coil all the way around the wick.

with poking and prodding.... try poking the coil next to the one glowing a little closer to the glowing one. or adding more space between them.

in almost all cases i have found changing the angle of the wraps and/or even spacing to be the biggest culprit.

you did not say what kind of rba - guage wire and number of wraps, this may be some of the problems as well.

it is frustrating at first but keep trying and you will get it.

if you can pull the wick without disturbing the coil you can dry brun the coil a few shots to clean it up.
you can also torch and rinse the wick to help clear it also if needed .seeing now how its an older coil it could have loosened up a bit with age and constant heating or be caked up with crap.

As stated above there are so many factors that come in to play. I just got a Bliss V2 its been the hardest Geny for me to set up with the dual wicks. I use the drill bit method on the attys I have that are tight or every thing is so close together I dont have much room to wrap properly. Something like the IHybrid where you have all the room in the world I just wrap the wick in place.
Ive noticed also LR coils work better in Genys verses HV ones. So I stick with 4 wraps evenly spaced and I usually get 1.4 OHMs with 32 gauge wire. If I use 28 gauge I can get 1.2 some times but it seems to me it takes longer for the thicker gauge to heat up. I think the action word would better be described as moving the coils around instead of poking and prodding.
There is no set formula as you make each coil buy hand and so there will be different variances each time. Ive had coils work perfectly one day then had a short the next. Could be heat expansion and contraction? so on and so fourth. I think its my wife being ornery because Ive done something to irritate her so she shorts my coils to get me back! ;-)

Excellent advice.
