I'm a shameless profiteer...petroleum. Oil sells for a better price per barrel than lava.

Yeah...I was doing really well, studying at Amherst College but paying Hampshire college prices (love the 5 school cooperative thing...) and had an offer from MIT to do a combined masters and PHD with them after graduating Hampshire. When I changed majors I had one of the deans from MIT chase me around for a few years trying to get me back. Then I had several petroleum companies trying to get me to go back to school on their dime to then go work for them. During a college job fair your could see them drooling when they found out my major.

MS intervened however so all of that went out the window and I became a potter. Which strangely enough uses exactly the same skill set of knowledge from geophysics only speeded up a LOT! As I tell my students pottery is 95% science, 2.5% art and 2.5% luck. ;)

Ckquatt, I don't know how you do it, you are a better man than me. I would set myself up a judge, jury, and executioner.
I thank you for doing this very unpleasant job...

Ive seen some pretty horrible things in my 13 years both as a patrol officer and as an investigator. You get used to it after a while.

Don't see how anyone could be negative about what you do .....it's a job most would run from, and even if you don't find it your favourite work, it's a fine job, and one of the most worthy!
Thank you for being part of what helps make the world a safer place, especially for children.

Our eldest son is a police officer (crash investigation & f/arms) - he sees & does some pretty unpleasant things.

I always said if I ever woke up in the morning and said "...ugh! Im not going to work today" I would quit and find something else to do. I LOVE my job and cant imagine doing anything else. Iys pretty much ruined me for any other type of work. LOL!

Sadly enough most people couldn't stomach what you do. Also, most would, as said by somebody else, try to be judge jury and executioner. I myself would love to be a coroner or a crime scene investigators. Death fascinates me.

And don't get me wrong some cops just do horrible things. I've seen a fair few things cops have done on my favorite website. Most recent I saw was the swat team that was deployed to a house in full riot gear, police dog and an armored vehicle... over a dog pooping on somebody's lawn. The dog, a small lhasa apso it looked, ran up and looked at the team and turned around and the cops opened fire (with an m4 assault rifle) on it killing it... That was one time i was so ...... and hoped somebody was fired or jailed.

I think that's the best part of my job! I love love love crime scenes! I'm also the one who gets to do all the lab processing. I have a lab with all the "CSI" chemicals and can pull a fingerprint off of anything with a styrofoam cup a pipe cleaner and superglue! I get to play Mr. Wizard two or three times a week!

I was a SANE Nurse (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) for a while and I get it. Totally get it. It numbed me after a while.

Exactly. Numb is the correct word. But I guess it's a good thing. It keeps you from going crazy! LOL!

As they should be! (fired or jailed) I have no tolerance for idiocy like that! It really makes me sick, but that old adage is "a few rotten apples spoils the bunch".

I'm with you. I have four dogs (all rescues and older, I WILL NOT train a puppy, lol) and they are my babies. They truly are members of this family.

Are you getting your CDCA? I just applied for it. Crossing my fingers I'll get it because of my licensure issues with the Board of Nursing in Ohio.

Sentry was born on 12-21-12 and I took her home on 1-28-14. She's spoiled rotten. They don't call them Boxers for no reason. She will jump on you. She will make you pay attention to her. And she will make every attempt at stealing your food that she can.
However, she's a cuddle monster. She sits and stays on command(unless Granny or Princess Grandma is in the house). Holds her head up so I can put her collar and leash on. Takes a shower with me once a week and sleeps on my pillow.
She is my heart. Her name is tattooed on me. You don't want her to jump on you and show you love? Don't come over. Don't want to share your spot on the couch with her? Don't come over. Don't like animals? Forget that you know me.
Another thing I'm passionate about. :D

Ill play! Ill probably get some *groans* for this one though.

13 year Police Detective with a specialty in internet crimes. Im a member of the GBI (Georgia Bureau of Investigations) Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force. Which means I basically go after child molesters, child traffickers, and child porn distributors. Not something I wanted to get involved in but as I dont have nor want kids they thought I would have a more objective attitude towards the investigations. It still sucks though!!

I know with the current climate regarding the public and Law Enforcement I expect to get flamed and trolled a little but in my mind I go after a special breed of evil so you guys go easy on me! LOL!!

I can't imagine and don't want to imagine the horror and evil that you have seen. I am thankful that there are people that can do this type of work to keep our kids safe. No flaming from me, just immense respect.

Thank you for making sure our utilities are taken care of! You guys have to deal with such muck and you are the unsung heros of a modern city

My favorite story about problems with idiocy was about a coworker of mine. She was home having a nap (a 75 year old woman in her underwear on the couch mind you) when the swat team burst into her house front and back door simultaneously. She sat up to massive guns in her face, was grabbed and handcuffed and thrown against the wall as they searched her house top to bottom. Finally someone showed her the search warrant and there is this mother of 13, grandmother and great grandmother looking at the warrant without her glasses. So she says to one of the swat guys, "Sweetie, would you get my glasses?" so he had to get her glasses on her face then she looked at it and said to the guy, "Sweetpea, this house is four blocks away!"

The head of the attack force had to get approval to check it out but the hazmat folks did a clean sweep of her house anyway as she sat there with a dish towel over her ample body in handcuffs. So finally, after two hours, they figure out that yes, the house where crack was being cooked they were supposed to go to is indeed four blocks away. And because the Denver police department's inability to read street signs the house was empty when they went to check it out as the crack-heads had ample warning of the raid. Then it took them six months of her begging and a threat of a lawsuit to get her front and back doors replaced. We never heard what happened to the guy in charge of directions that day but I can't imagine his bosses were happy...

And Loretta in all her sweetness had pizza delivered to them when they did finally plan to replace everything (four of the swat team guys showed up to help and they kept apologizing over and over and she baked them all cookies and fed them lunch while getting to pinch their cheeks and got to know them and said they were all the same age as her grandsons...LOL) Then after everything the police sent her a huge bouquet of flowers with a note with everyone signing the card. She tells this story so wonderfully with an detailed account of the guys she came to know. Just priceless!

I've only had (pretty much) pleasant run ins with law enforcement, too. One of my very best friends' dad is a deputy sheriff. I met my lady when she was 17, I was 22. Nothing inappropriate happened, she was just leaving home and coming to see me at work. Her parents decided to press charges. Can you believe you can go to jail and be court ordered to stay away from a 17 year old just for SPEAKING to them? Anyways, thankfully knowing Jerry (deputy) he called me at about 2 AM after the warrant was filed and told me to come down so nobody would see. Her dad actually knew my work schedule and wanted them to come get me from work so I would be fired. Jerry called and let me come down and drive myself to the jail. 6 months of court and BS but I finally got her. :D
Strangely enough, her mom and I are very good friends now. She considers me one of her children and a blessing to her daughter and family.
I can't remember the moral to this story?
Oh! Yes! I've only had good cops come into my life. Pulled over for speeding, guy was super sweet. Locked my keys in my truck twice, Sheriff's department came out and unlocked my truck, super nice guys. Lady got pulled over by a state trooper, super nice guy.

I love boxers! I owned a house cleaning business and one loft I gave a bid at had boxers. The male I was warned about before I came over. He was supposed to growl at me and run from me. When I knocked at their door I could hear him losing it. So I walked in, said hello to the people then sat down and said hello to the female who slobbered all over me and tried to fit her not so small body onto my lap. The male just looked suspiciously from across the room.

As we wandered around their loft talking the male started following us then stuck his head under my hand so I could rub his head. Then every toy and shoe in the loft was brought to me so I interrupted our tour to sit and make his acquaintance. When we sat down to talk both tried to fit themselves on my lap. Turns out my bid wasn't the lowest but they hired me because their "cranky" boxer loved me so much that after I left he howled at the door.

I loved those dogs. Every time I came to clean there was always a point where I had to sit down to get slobbered on and play with toys before I could work.

Agreed. I love animals too! Im more a cat person than dog person (as in owning them. 4 cats 0 dogs) but I do love them equally. We had a pretty large dog fighting thing here a couple of years ago and was absolutely sickened by the treatment of those dogs. It was all I could do not to lose it on those people.

You want to get me where it hurts? Abuse an animal!

Funny story as to why. When I was about 6 or 7 my dad took me duck hunting. I love to shoot guns so I thought it would be fun! He had one of those cool duck blinds built into the pond so you had to get to it by boat.

We were out there for hours and he finally got one. Our dog went and retrieved it and he handed it to me and told me to hold on to it. I started balling! Crying so hard that I was coughing and what not. After about 15 minutes of him trying to calm me down we left. After that never went hunting again and cannot harm an animal!

Hell! We have tons of deer wrecks here and when I was a patrol officer i couldnt bring myself to put one out of its misery! I always made someone go with me to do it. I always got laughed at, but I just cant do it.

I have a hard time killing animals as well. Used to have to kill the rats I would buy to feed my snake. He was once bit by a rat and it hurt him pretty bad so after that I would buy the rats and put them in a bag and smack them against the house to kill them quickly. Would make me feel awful for a while, but it was for the well-being of my pet.

I know what you mean. I like animals more than I like people. I also have a cat! She's pretty cool. I'm not really a cat person, as far as owning them(deathly allergic) but we found her at Waffle King and I fell in love. I fish but that's it. I couldn't kill an animal just for the sport of it.

Would he not eat f/t(frozen/thawed)? Some snakes won't. Especially large snakes.
