When asked if you know what you're inhaling....consider this!

So it occurred to me the other day that I was vaping when vaping wasn't cool and didn't even realize it. In fact I wouldn't doubt it if your grandma's a vaper and doesn't know it. Let me explain:

I spent close to five years during my early twenties managing two retail candy stores. 50% of all products sold in these stores were made in house by yours truly. For those of you who are perhaps unaware most flavorings, if not all, are already based in either pg or vg! Now...and follow my logic here...when you heat a sugar mixture to somewhere between a soft-ball and hard-ball temperature and then dump a teaspoon or two of these flavors into it what happens? A mushroom cloud of highly aromatic steam (...or vapor!) is released that's what. Not only did I and my employees inhale these fumes repeatedly each and every day but the stores I worked for could be considered guilty of intentionally subjecting the general public to them as well! You see there were fan hoods located over the stove in these stores and guess where they were vented to? The roof? Out the back? Negative...they were specifically vented directly into the common areas of the mall or shopping center in order to draw customers in with the aroma. In other words we intentionally crop dusted the general public with vaporized PG, VG and artificial flavors EVERY SINGLE DAY! In fact on slow days we would make multiple smaller batches specifically to keep that aroma in the air as much as possible.

Now in addition to this I know of one store in my immediate area which is similar to the ones I managed. It is located on the Santa Cruz boardwalk. In there case it is the boardwalk arcade getting crop dusted which is typically filled with literally hundreds of children! Oh the horror!!!

The one thing I truly miss about running candy stores is the fact that every customer who walked in the door always had a smile on their face. You know what I was never asked in nearly five years however? Not once did anyone ever ask or express any concern about the hazards of what I was inhaling! Nor did I ever once have an employee from a neighboring store or a customer express any concern what so ever!

I do realize the missing component here is the nicotine itself (unless you vape zero nic). However seeing as how virtually all of us are ex-smokers already addicted to nicotine it really makes me wonder how my local paper just published an article stating that the California Attorney General is now suing Smoking Everywhere under the basis that "e-cigs contain dangerous chemicals". As compared to cigarettes!!??? Hmmmm....somebody trying to preserve tobacco tax revenue and the already failing state budget??? Ya think??

What a great Post, Canute, I just posted on another Thread, 'short of breath?' regarding VG PG and flavorings.
Couldn't agree more on all points, especially the tax thing!! I just saw yesterday the FDA is opening new studies on ingredients in commercial cigarettes. Sounds like they're gearing up for some more ammunition. Wonder what will get banned next, or hiked taxes!!!!
Check this link:

I caught that on the news last night too! It amazes me how simple the ingredients are in e-liquid and yet it is under such heavy scrutiny, meanwhile tobacco has been commercialized for god knows how long and yet it is legal despite it being nearly impossible to find out EXACTLY what has been added too it!

Excellent post! I know I'm feeling (and smelling) much better since I substituted vaping for these:

Fire safe cigarette - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wow! K...I read quite a bit on FSC's going back a while but never Wiki'd it. I was especially interested to see that I couldn't find any FDA study regarding the new chemicals used to make FSC's nor could I find a study published by anyone else. Now that I've read the Wiki article though I will add a couple of quotes from their FSC definition to my 'interesting' list.

1) "Philip Morris USA (PM) has reported that the adhesive EVA (carpet glue)and polyvinyl acetate are used in the non-tobacco ingredients of cigarettes produced as a side-seam adhesive" - Uhh....did you say carpet glue!!!!

2) "The FSC cigarettes are shown to be more toxic and many have complained of headaches, stomach aches, breathing problems, and other side effects from these FSC cigarettes." - And where was the FDA on this one....oh yeah...full support!

It is interesting how they pick and choose what we can do with our bodies or even what we subject our neighbors to. I know the arcade you're taling about and the candy shop as well. Not that I hung out much at the Boardwalk, I was more of the Pacific Garden Mall type, loved going there back in the day (mid eighties).

My wife is from Salinas and I met her at Cannery Row in Montery. I always loved Santa Cruz especially when the butterflies came in.

Your post makes me wonder about the fudge shops on Makinaw Island (Northern Michigan) they do the same thing (not that I worry about it). Funny thing about Mi. they just banned smoking in bars but not in Casinos. Now figure that one out?

I've lived all over the western half of the US and parts of the south and have to say I love Santa Cruz! And I'm more of a Pacific Garden Mall guy myself. Try to get down there once every couple weeks to people watch if nothing else (also get a kick out of vaping on the street down there because a lot of people approach me and ask about it...especially since they just enacted an outdoor smoking ban down there. Course my fiance gets PO'd cuz I tend to get a lot of young girls asking me about it!!! LOL).

Regarding the Casino...is it on Indian Reservation? I went to Black Oak Casino up by Sonora a few weeks back and had a blast vaping away as I played some slots in the smoking area. (I personally don't vape anyplace they don't allow smoking just cuz I don't want to give us vapers a bad name...only exception being outside places in which I would have ignored the bans as a smoker anyhow)

Nope not on a Reservation just really big business. It's owned and controlled by some pretty big money people. But I don't really have a problem with the Casinos as I know a few tribal members that get some pretty phat checks each month.

Let's give the red man some whiskey and take his land.
Let's give the white man gambling and get our land back.

I miss the West Coast, especially the oceans and the mountains, But I don't miss the cost of living at all. I paid cash for my house here with less than the down payment on a house in Salinas. Well if housing prices keep gowing down I might just have to move back!! If I had a choice it would be Big Sur or Scotts Valley.

My sister smokes those fire-safe things, she says she likes the idea except they go out before you can get your second puff. I keep telling her to get away from that stuff, but she's so stubborn.....don't know where she got that. Now I can tell her at least my PV doesn't have any carpet tape to burn. Just amazing.

It was my understanding that they exempted the casinos because the thought was that if they included the casinos then people would take their gambling to the indian casinos because they came out and said that they wouldn't conform to the smoking ban because they were seperate entities on federally protected land..

Yah that sounds about right. I live in Michigan but I pretty much boycott the MSM so I didn't follow it real close. But it sure did seem like a bum deal for the local bars to longer allow smoking. The local watering holes were I live are mostly very small and have a dozen or so old timers sitting around talking politics and smoking cigs and cigars. I doubt the old timers are going to feel like going outside to smoke.

Good for the Native Americans - at least they are not letting the nanny government dictate their business practises.

What they did to the Seneca in NY was to declare that in order to send cigarettes in the mail, they had to pay an export tax. Also, the US Postal Service could not pick up their shipments, they had to take them to the post office themselves (compliant with exporting tags). Then, they got the CC companies to withhold payments for tobacco products. That was about 9 years ago. End of online sales, etc.
Was pretty dirty, my opinion. And for awhile I could get them by calling in my checking account numbers, but pretty soon they had to raise prices so far it was not even worth the trouble anymore. We had to go to RYO, and you know the rest of that story. Tax hike, a little one. Price of tobacco went from $12 to $41 a pound.
Enter: NPRO electronic cigarette.
I guess it was time for us to quit smoking, eh? I guess if you buy them and smoke them on Indian land they'd be cheaper and Legal. Our Government is not very nice, sometimes. Now they're picking on e-cigs. Geez!

I actually love the way you worded that. Maybe you should write a letter to the editor and one to the AG.

Actually, I got my last few bags of RYO cigarette tobacco for about $15 a pound. Some online sites are just cutting it a bit different and labelling it pipe tobacco, and tax hike on pipe tobacco was very minimal. I still have 1 3/4 bags left. Want to buy it? ;) The price on tubes also went up accordingly.
