I use silica wicks. I rewick them when enough sediment collects on them that it impairs the wicking/heating/vaporizing/taste. Where that point is is largely a judgment call, but eventually I perceive the performance has dropped. I do not dry-burn and prefer to use fresh wicks.

I could probably extend wick life by paying closer attention, catching the build up a little earlier and doing a little dry burning, but I'm okay with how I do it.

When it tastes burnt, which is pretty often at the high wattage I like. I keep silica in the coil, even for the coils I rebuild, just so I can dry-burn and not have to worry about threading a new wick into the tiny 2mm space inside a T3S coil so often. I replace the cotton flavor wick probably about every other day or so, which is about how often cotton will taste burnt, at my preferred high wattage -- which is precisely why I keep silica in the coil, it doesn't burn/scorch or wear out nearly as quickly as cotton does.

I rewick after every tank so that I can dry burn the coil and start fresh. At most, I'll go two tanks.

I have my coil set up so that my mech mod is just under the point of a dry hit when I start a fresh battery. This gives me a nice vape as the battery loses power through the day. So I usually have a couple burnt spots at the end of the day when I finish a tank.
